What sux about Boynton is you have to come around that corner and do not get time to see what you are up against until you have to commit. At least Jupiter and Stuart you have a long straight approach to figure out timing or whether to make a U turn.

We would sit at the edge of Boca Inlet when i was a kid and watch people round the corner for a look, then turn back. That's a tiny little inlet and it's not shallow, but i've seen plenty of nopes
Wow....bet that was scary being in that boat when it was being pushed by the surf. Might have been better for him to keep heading out. Not sure how much more he had to go to get past the breakers.

That does suck, but people need to take advantage of the available resources:
Somebody heard that the boat turned because he was afraid of running over the surfers! Surfers have no business impeding the safe passage of a vessel transiting a dangerous inlet. Had he gone straight and an incident had occurred, the surfers would literally have not had a leg to stand on for a defense.

You are totally wrong! Anyone who knows how to run out of Boynton when there is a big swell has the experience to stay at the mouth just south, near the end of the north jetty and assess the opportunity to run out when there is a break, IF there is a break between sets. Presently, the bar is most shallow right out front where that guy, who had no business going out that day, went straight into a big set and turned at the obviously wrong time. Thankfully, all survived. The deepest water now is almost down to the Ocean Club before the bar curves into the beach.
Nope Mangrove Mark is right. On days like that you have to wait right at the mouth in front of the small jetty and assess the situation first ( he would have also noticed all the surfers) He ran right out into the middle of that set coming in. That wave breaking right on him would have dumped him as well had he chose to keep going . Had he waited a minute, he would have had his opportunity to go between the sets and head south a little first. I have been out that inlet numerous times in the winter since I was a kid in the 70's and this is how you would proceed. I was there that morning drinking coffee and watching but left right before this happened. A lot of boats went out that morning
year ago, myself and fishing buddy in his 20' seacraft, came around corner to be met with 6-7' swells, breaking in front.. He headed SSE in a trough until the swells played out, then headed out...ya gotta be ready

Does anyone know how much experience that guy had? Just curious. A few years ago a guy went down in FPI, he made mistake coming in and it turned out he had a ton of experience.....just made a mistake
Frydaddy, anyone with local knowledge already knew there would be a little crowd on the peak on a swell like this. Plus mangrove mark is 100% correct. Have to run out to the south in between the set waves and pay close attention to the white water patterns to see where the deeper spots are. He could have easily cut to the right and made it out. Terrible rookie mistake.
They are local boys one of my good friends was on the boat said they did not see the surfers till the last minute. The problem running South when there's a big swell is the sandbar sometimes it's only a foot and a 1/2 and you'll hit bottom. I personally rather take the swell head on then get broadsided I've been going out boynton for over 20 years
Watch the drone till the end...if he waited 1-2 minutes, after the set, you could have run a bass boat out. We're all 20/20 after the fact, woulda, coulda, shoulda, but honestly, just poor judgement imo. Even if I'm running a big boat, my head is still on a swivel and still processing everything from tide, current, wind, boats, jet skis, surfers, swimmers, debris, SWELLS, shoal areas (reading the waves), etc.
