He's just around the corner from 10 yrs old so I figured it's time to start the process. He did pretty well, especially considering the stock was too long for him. I took care of that after he headed back to Spring Hill. Next time he sees it, it will probably also have a holographic site on it,
Good for you, Grandpa! Got mine (Red Rider) about the same age. Gave the sparrows and blackbirds what for at my grandparents. Bought first .22 with my own money at age 12, a Winchester Model 67. Paid about $13.00 for it as I remember. Brand new from a Whittier sporting goods store. Missed a lot of rabbits but sure had fun! Still have the gun. Both of us antiques! Never wore shooting glasses but don't think anyone seemed to "way back when".
SO WHEN IS THIS "OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW BETTER" SUPPOSED TO KICK IN?
I had the pump bb gun from dasiy too, way better than the red rider. I loved that gun. I got a red rider now and that thing only shoots about 50 feet, were they always that weak?

What I said was a joke. Ever see A Christmas Story?
I got my first BB gun when I was 7. I wanted a Red Ryder, but my brother and I got Daisy pumps. They were better than Red Ryders, but not as cool.
Yes, I have seen it but not for many years. Classic film. I like to come clean with my mistakes. Prevents future complications. I have the shooting glasses on order and they will be here before he makes it back up this way unless we manage to make it out fishing.
Love it! He will wear that Ryder out. All my daughters and granddaughters got one for Christmas. Here is Gail with her first "Red Ryder". She didn't shoot her eye out but now she can hit a target as big as an eye at 300 yds!
Enjoyed the comments and pictures. I wouldn't want to get in a shootin' match with Gail or Jons son.. Hope I can be around long enough to teach him a love for shooting and also how to locate good fishing spots.

I never owned the red Ryder my grandpa did. That first summer we started with tin cans and thats the gun he showed us all about cleaning them. My cousin and I both got "10 pump" bb guns for Christmas that year. Whats the deal with the "sparrows" that was all we were supposed to shoot but there were way more pigeons than any other bird. Grandpa laid the boots to my cousin though the day he watched him shoot a Robin. I think that gun is still stuck up his _ss🤔😆
