Hadn't caught one of these in over 15 years.

Other people may catch these often but it took me 15 years to catch another one onshore.   I know they are 100 miles offshore in deep water and under oil platforms, but I caught this one off of Cedar Keys pier.  Caught them in the Atlantic ocean off piers several times but only a couple of times in the gulf.  The fish is a Spade Fish, a small one 11 to 12 inches but it put up a good fight for its size..

Not too uncommon above wrecks and artificial reefs. They will hit a small piece of Squid, but the best bait by far are small pieces cut from a Jellyball.

I've never caught one inshore here. Funny how they are common in one area but not another. We commonly caught them off the pier in Gulf Shores Al.

Back when you were allowed in the power plant discharge the were sometimes thick. Pulled like crazy in that current.

I ate one once.  The filets were very thin and the meat was quite dark.  It was edible, but I wouldn't bother eating it again.

Used to catch tons of them in the hot water canal when it was running.

They're all over the CK steel tower too.

I kept one once, cleaned it but didn't get as far as eating it. The meat was a strange bluish gray tint. Even more bluish gray than kingfish meat.

they are the best bait ever for amberjack.  You can’t catch one too big either.  The bigger the spadefish the bigger the AJ

there was a market for them , price was like .25/lb so not a real desirable food fish..

I had some chowder once made from spades, it weren't bad but nothing to bring home..

I spadefish, angelfish, Sheepshead, all the same thing.
