Kevin(permit_me) and I fished the mangroves on the incoming early Friday. Bite was good and we got a dozen reds, a couple small snook and a good number of keeper snapper. Fish were tight against the groves. We used live shrimp, mini grunts and pins. We also threw a wide variety of artificials but I don't think either one of us caught anything on them. Kevin did have a serious hit on Rapala. We figured it to be a good sized snook. I ended up with a slam (redfish, snook, trout and mangrove snapper) but not a braggin' slam. Company and the weather was good in the Big Bend.
It was a real solid bite for about two hours. I'd suspect it was real strong bite when that tide was coming in early a.m. predawn and dawn. By the time we got there just before 8, fish were in the mangroves. Actually, that first fish, a smaller snook was caught on a Rapala. Then ted started hooking some reds on shrimp so i switched over. Found a nice spot. Saw manatees swam by, snappers of good size (i dont think we caught any undersized ones), snook and reds - maybe a spring was very near there??? We kept six snappers from about 12 in to 15 in. Wifey blackened em last night, mmm. Ted got a slam. A slam is always a good day. We'd been trying to get out for a few weeks now...thanks for getting me out. now to uncover my sled and get it out there this week, weather permitting.
