It amaze me how large a fish these birds can eat.

Out on a hike this morning I filmed a Blue Heron eating a good size Bullhead.  I don't know how they can get a fish this large down their's throats.  The slow-mo at the end came out great showing how they can do it.

Good video.  It's always amazed me, too.  I've seen Sea Gulls (s.h.i.t. hawks) walking around with bait fish tails sticking out of their beaks.  I guess they continue swallowing as the previously eaten digests,  but how do they do it without choking ??

While fishing in Baja I fed a pelican a 2-3 lb grouper.  It fought it for about 20 minutes before swallowing it.  My wife was pissed @ me for doing it.

Why would you feed a grouper to a pelican? That's what bait and trash fish are for.

Long time ago I netted 2 really nice mullet and put them in a 5 gallon bucket in the yard.   Went inside to get a bite to eat.  Blue Heron came in and I thought way to big of a fish for that guy to take.  He looked in that bucket like he had just hit the lottery, head in and took a mullet and walked away and after a bit was able to get it down.  Then he walked back over and took the other one.  Just amazing the size of fish they can eat.

In San Diego its illegal to clean fish at the Marina's.since the large carcasses that are thrown into the water are believed to kill pelicans when they try to swallow one and it gets stuck in the throat. There are no cleaning tables at any of the Marinas and signs are posted that warn fisherman of this regulation.

The regulations, in CA, used to be you can clean your fish on the boat if the filets are a certain size and you leave 1 sq" of skin on them.  Haven't been there in 20+ years so don't know if they changed.  I was always the fish fileter on the way in.

That still applies in Cali; clean fish at sea and leave enough skin to ID.  Over there they generally prefer to have strict bag limits with no size limit for most things.  A lot of the fishery is deep water (by our standards) rockfish that tend not to survive the elevator trip up.
