portatble Gen. on boat

Just got a portable Gen. for home nd boat...Instructions say MUST GROUND gen. to ground source.?
how would I do that at home on my deck and how would I do that on a boat?...1st time having  a Gen...TIA

What brand genny? Haven’t seen a portable that requires grounding.

If you are using it as a sole source of power it should be grounded. Sitting on the deck of a boat as long as the generator only feeds onboard power to the boat, you’re ok, just use the grounds on the plugs. At home you want the ground in case something being powered by the generator shorts to ground. The ground is what allows the breaker to trip and turn off power in case of a ground fault.

Sportsman, by Buffalo Corp. from HD...other people said it's a common statement on how to use...it's mostly CYA for company...on boat it will be used on deck to power AC...thanks for info...

One other thing unrelated to the grounding issue. If running a portable on deck, be aware of possible carbon monoxide. Recently some folks perished sleeping on the boat while running a portable on the deck..

thanks, yes I am aware, and it would be positioned such that the exhaust would be carried away from cabin and cabin door will be closed...there is a CO monitor in cabin also.
