Fished this past Friday. Considering that our last two outings hunting for dolphin were both a big zero..things could only get better…or at least not worse. The day started off on a sunny note. When Pedro, our live bait supplier, dipped a net full of pilchards to pass over he discovered a baby turtle in his live well that he had caught throwing his net for bait. The baby turtle was immediately released in Govt Cut and I only hope he made it at least a hundred feet from the boat before he got eaten. Game plan was to run and gun between 600’ - and 1200’ and look to toss livies at weed patches and, if we were lucky, at any flotsam or working birds If that didn’t work we would troll small feathers and bally. We did both on Friday. At about 600 feet we pulled up tp a promising patch and threw a few livies for chum plus our baits. In short order we hooked two releasing one undersize and glad to keep a small keeper about 4#. As we ran out we came across a decent weed line which ran east to west…not the usual north to south. There were quite a few boats fishing the patches. Most were working the individual patches with livies and others trolled working both sides of the weed line. Despite the length of the weed line which ran from 600' -1200’ we never saw a rod bend from any boat including our own. In fact the patches were oddly devoid of small runners or jacks. We then ran out to 1400’ where the water was swept clean so we began blind trolling. After a while we came across a few decent patches and we pulled up and throw some live chum and deployed our live bait. In addition to the live chum we started a continuous steam of chumming with cut dead pilchards. After a while we got two hits on livies with 6# schoolies . ..no other fish followed. So that’s it for the day…four hits…four dolphin caught..three kept. A poor catch by any regular standard but better than the past few trips.
