New to fly fishing. Looking for help

ChadsSeaCraftChadsSeaCraft Posts: 15 Deckhand
Hello,
anyone in northern Palm Beach County/ Martin County willing to help a new guy out? I work a rotating schedule and have at least 2 weekdays a week to fish. I have loved the idea of fly fishing ever since I was a little kid. I want the addiction but so far all I have is frustration! Any help is greatly appreciated.

Respectfully,
chad

I would get ahold of Mike Conner or one of your local fly shops and get a fly casting lesson. A 1 hour lesson can do wonders for you.
Once the casting is good to go. I find practicing on fish like spanish mackerel and peacock bass are great because they are very aggressive and forgiving.
I see to many guys jump in way to fast, buy $2k worth of gear and try for big tarpon their first time out before ever even learning how to cast. Usually results in them giving up and selling their gear on ebay at a big loss.

You have one of the finest and largest fishing club in
the world,The West Palm Fishing Club not far from you.
Someone in that club know how to fly fish and has the
    boat.

Just don't pull my stunt while you're learning to cast.  Practicing in my yard, I was having trouble keeping momentum up, so crimped a BB sized split shot on end of leader.  (no hook)  That was fine and it was really whizzing back and forth.....until it caught me on the ridge of bone right behind my right ear.  Migawd, but it made a loud crack.....and put me on my knees.  That was sore for a while.

If youre into reading, you could try books about fly fishing. Ive personally learned a lot from reading Dumb Luck and the Kindness of Strangers by John Gierach. If youre looking for more book recommendations, you should check this useful site.

Heck yea, a casting lesson and then practice. Paper plates make great targets. Don’t use a bb. :D  Use some yarn without a hook
