King’s out of Mayport 28 May

SeaBossSeaBoss Posts: 3 Greenhorn
Left out of jetties and no bait found South but plenty birds.  I then went to MR area and trolled deep diver, pencil baits, and and a rattle jet.  Caught one King on deep diver.  Lost one on daisy chain.   Decided to then drift with ribbon fish and lost another one.   Headed back to STJ and while I was waiting for storm to pass decided to troll again lost two more Kings one on rattle jet and another on daisy chain.  Bonito where everywhere and used a Clark’s spoon casting to them and caught several.   End of day was a Jack Crevalle that weighed every bit of 30+ pounds.

Sounds like you had a reasonably good day & thanks for the report capt. The bone heads are fun when their like that. Wore out many white bucktails on a yellow tail rod like that.

Why do you think you're hookup to box ratio was not good? Drag to tight?

Lost one definitely cause I broke the rule of getting excited and tightened up on drag like a dummy.  Small #4 treble hooks on ribbon fish looks as if I only had the last one in him and pulled out.  Other than that 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Those thin #4 trebles will rip right through skin if you foul hooked him anywhere.  Absolute must for light drag.  That stinger hook saves a lot of hookups.

Yup, thats happened to me plenty of times. Plus it can be easy to lift the rod a little to much and take the give out of the tip, or add his wight.

I like to run real loose drag like 2 or 3 lbs. No kidding. I want to pull line off only holding it with my fingertips & thats with a bend in the rod. Let him go for that fast run, let that tiny heart overheat & reel him in. You can always put a finger on the line to increase the drag. momentarily, but not when it's running.

Did you get cut off on the daisy chain's, or rattel jets?

Rattle jet is what I tightened up drag on but didn’t get cut off on anything.   Pink/white color Rattle Jet and made my own daisy chain using green/yellow skirts with a green/orange/yellow bullet head.
