Memorial Day weekend report.

Headed out Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. Castandblast and a duck hunting buddy. Rough seas, rough night before for the crew, still made it happen. I knew we were in trouble when I saw the weekend warriors heading back into the inlet on offshore boats. We slogged the Seafox out about 20 miles and caught some vermillion and red snapper, slow trolled cigars for a few mins and picked up a king for the smoker and a cuda.

Sunday we found nicer seas and sent it deep, 55 miles out on the bay boat. Picked up our first Mahi around 120ft then another in 125, both peanuts. Then saw a big school of about 50 of them on a small weed patch but had lockjaw, tried everything in the box they wouldn’t even eat small chunks of ballyhoo. After 20 mins had hooked 2 one on a jig one on a doa shrimp so left them hanging and started trolling again, 5 boneheads later decided to bottom fish. I don’t go that deep often and the few spots I had close to us weren’t producing so hit a spot I marked while trolling, brought up some bs and snapper then got slammed on the grouper rod. I could tell it was a big shark but fought it anyway. Came up with a Cobia, we had seen another Cobia and few big sharks around so started chumming. Ended up with 5-6 big sharks and about a dozen Cobia around boat. Went 5/6 one got taxed, all 20-30lbs the one that got smoked was a little bigger. Box was full and we were out of chum so called it a day and were done cleaning fish before dark. Mahi was 23” and full of roe already.
