FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - A Virginia family out for a ride to get a change of scenery after being holed up due to the coronavirus found nearly $1 million in two bags lying in the road.

Deputies are investigating how the money ended up on the side of the road. (Source: Family photos/WTVR/CNN)

David and Emily Schantz left their Caroline County home with their children last Saturday and drove their pickup truck over what they thought was a bag of trash, then stopped and picked it up as well as another bag nearby, news sources reported Tuesday.

The Schantzes tossed the bags in the back of their pickup truck and kept riding, according to Emily Schantz.

Only when the Schantzes returned home did they discover the bags contained money, she said.

"Inside of the bag, there were plastic baggies and they were addressed with something that said 'cash vault,'" Schantz told WTVR.

They contacted the Caroline County Sheriff's Office, which sent deputies to the home. The deputies took inventory and determined the money totaled nearly $1 million.

Caroline Sheriff's Maj. Scott Moser said authorities have since determined where the money was headed, but are still trying to figure out how it ended up in the middle of a road in Goochland County. Moser would not say specifically where the money was going. But he said he hopes the recipients offer the Schantzes a nice reward.

“Their actions deserve nothing less,” Moser said. “They saved someone a lot of money and set a wonderful example for everyone else.”

I would do exactly what they did.

I would have dumped the bags and searched the plastic bags the money was in for any kind of devices.
And,,,,,, no one would know a thing. Especially if the bags had no identification on them.

Whoever lost that kind of cash probably had insurance on it! Meaning, it was replaceable for them!

I wouldn't watch Ozark if I found a large amount of cash and had my name in the press.

I would return it, if for no other reason than they will trace it to you sooner or later as you get greedy and do something stupid like pay cash for a new truck

I actually hope I am honest enough to return it without thinking about keeping it.

It would be hard to spend it without drawing attention to yourself. You could try and run it through a business.

I would be more than happy to turn over the $500,000 i found
This right here sums it up for me. Everybody knows any sums of money bagged up with the words cash vault on it automatically gives half away to generous family cleaning the sides of the road of everyone else's "garbage" right

I just can't figure out if it's the guys who said they would keep it or the ones that said they would turn it in. :p

Littering is illegal.  Seems like I have been picking up other peoples trash for years.  No one has ever come lookin for it after I properly disposed of it.  Some of it was beer cans that I later sold for cash.  I never saw anything wrong with that. I guess if I found a discarded bag of money I would keep it until some one came looking for it.

Leaving Florida... take a developer with you!

After thinking about it, you just know if you turned in a portion of the money you are now the prime suspect for where the rest is.   So unless you have some bullet proof method of laundering it you'll never get to use it.  So in my mind it's all or nothing after thinking it over.   You either take half and leave the other half so someone else can turn it in or you keep it all.    Thinking it over i think i'd prob take half, leave the other half.   Someone finds it great, but if they turn it in now they are the suspect for the rest and you're in the clear.

Go into a casino, cash in, play a little cash out. Do it a few times, buy a private sale used boat. Many ways to spend $1MM cash.

I won't even try to pretend.  It would depend on denominations for me.  10s and 20s, it would be mine.  100s, no.  How would you explain changing $100 bills every time you go to market or where ever ??  How often have you ever seen someone paying for something with $100 bills ??  Doesn't happen - or very rarely.  I haven't got the faintest clue as to how to go about laundering money and, as has been said, are you going to hop on an airliner to fly to Luxembourg or the Caribbean to deposit it ??  You bet.

No one uses cash anymore.  All ATMs and money transfers.  Even high rolling house flippers don't pay cash on a cash sale - they transfer from their account.

About all you could do would be to pay cash for used items from private sellers - boats, cars, etc., then maybe re-sell them and deposit that money....but that would be limited, too.

Whitey Bulger learned how to  exclusively live on cash for quite a while before he got caught. It would be tempting for sure if it was small bills. I don't know if I could keep it though but then again read my signature.

What universe is that in? Cash is still king.
$100 bills, have you been grocery shopping? You can burn a Cnote and not have much in the buggy.
