pleasant surprise

JWTJWT Posts: 788 Officer
a couple days ago i had a pair of hawks come & land by the pool. by the time i got the camera out they were gone. so i have just left the camera on the bench since. i started to add some water to the pool today & saw this beauty land & by the time i got the camera she was in the pool. i realized that since i have been leaving it lower, they come in to bathe on the step! she didn't seem happy when she realized she was being watched. i am not great on hawk ID but this one doesn't seem like the red shoulders i see in the glades. any ideas? - (i don't think its a warsaw)

Those are ridiculously beautiful. With the eye color, I'm guess Cooper or Thin Shin. The grey head leads me to Cooper.... Regardless. Wow. Just wow. Those eyes.........

You guessed right - I passed your photos on to a Professional Falconer friend is SE Oregon.  He identified it as a mature Coopers.

Great pics!  At some point. I'm going to have to get a quality cam and add a skill.  I'd go with cooper's too.  Loving this side of the forum.

Ok, so I'm also now determined for a bird bath.  My ex was funny (10 years).  No bird bath was insisted.  No chickens (she grew up with them).  In spite of my pleas :)  Screened in pool, demanded.  Soooo...

Well, I've had an irrigation leak (reclaimed water so not a real biggy).  And I did 'fix' it at one point.  But it came back.  I've been letting it go lately.  There's a small puddle outside of my kitchen window.  The crows and bluejays are frequent visitors.  Quite a few starlings.  Seen numerous random others.  No 'birds of prey' in the water but red shouldered hawks and screech owls frequent my banyan tree, royal poinciana and bamboo.  Ospreys always around.  Seem to have a snow bird, winter time, great horned the last few years.  Never on my property.  But he responds to my calls which is so fun.

But it's time for a legitimate bath.  I'd like to try another owl box or two too.  And a bat house.

My last screech owl nesting box turned into a busy, buzzing bee hive.  It cost $180 to have it relocated.  I now understand the importance of waxing! the interior ceiling....

Speaking of starlings.  My mom called excited the other day.  She's 75 and self quarantining now for several weeks with and abundance of caution.  She said about 20 birds had flown into the windows in the last 30 min.  While we were talking, she said many more were continuing to hit windows.

She said she thought that I would think she's crazy.  I said "no".  "Sounds like a Stephen King novel!" we lol'd.

Funny how some bird's go to fight a reflection though.  And in those numbers.  And in these times.  It's easy to draw dark conclusions.

Be safe and thanks for sharing.  So important, especially now.

How neat. A birdbath is so important and an added enticement for them to visit. You say you have banyan trees, so I'm guessing you are south of Merritt Island. We rinse and refill our birdbath daily, the need for clean water is real with only the river available besides the runoff ditches. I have been stalking our birdbath trying to catch the titmice bathing.
I am sure yard birds will be more common postings since we are all at home. I only have blue Jay's and cardinals, haven't seen the hummers since HE trimmed my hibiscus. Grrr.
Dont draw dark conclusions. We may just be.more concious of their activities since we are home. Cardinals are famous for admiring and sparring with their reflection too. Not a sweeter bird. Never seen a Starling, but everyone says they are bratty. Lol. I would love an owl box. My carpentry skills stop at driving a nail. LMFAO. That is a gift many take for granted for sure.
I am trying to be efficient this week, without much luck. Thinking of making soap just to occupy my mind. Could clean closets. Should organize my office/craft room. The draw of being outside is stronger. Lol. Nice sunshine and a gentle breeze are pulling me outside. I'm glad you like it here. I do too. It is pretty wonderful. 🥰😉💝

A couple of weeks ago a Hawk chased a Finch into my west kitchen window.....and the Hawk hit, too.  Made a tremendous bang and I feared for the window.  I jumped up, looked out and saw a very unhappy Hawk about 20 ft away laying on its' side on the ground and clutching the also very unhappy Finch.  It saw me looking and flopped around some before sorting it out and getting airborne.  I'll bet it had a fearsome headache.
