Recommend good high mileage used car

dpdashdpdash Posts: 5,359 Admiral
I drive about 40-45k miles per year and am very hard on cars. I have had a couple of Honda Accord wagon's, the first one I put 234k and the one I have now has 173k. I bought them both with about 80k on them for really almost nothing. Both of them have been almost trouble free. I need the space of the wagon or a small sport utility for some large equipment that I occasionally carry.
Honda stopped making the Accord wagon in 97 so it is getting tougher to find descent used ones. I'm thinking of replacing mine but was looking for suggestions on what type of used wagon/small sport utility would you think would be "relatively" trouble free up to 200k or close to it?

If you get mileage reimbursement rent. I put 3,500 miles on last month.. Cost me zero.

    This. Or Subaru Outback.

We have an Outback and a Subaru. Both great mileage, great reliability, and super safe. And they will run forever.

Did an oil change on a Subaru GL at the shop in college with over 900,000 on it. Original motor.

The CRVs are nice too, but I thought they felt more like a mini-van in the cockpit when driving. That, and I like Subarus AWD system more as we take ours both into the mountains.

    Two good choices right there.

Also, regular (and documented) maintenance by the previous owner is a huge factor in longevity.

forgot to add that I would like good mileage, currently getting 26-27 hwy, want to be there or better. BTW, I am 100% commission and get no reimbursement other than IRS. I was thinking about the CRV, don't think the mileage is that great, is it?

Forester we get about 22/29 city/hwy and Outback we get about 23/31 city/hwy

I didn't think the CRV was bad on gas, but I could be wrong.

Another really cool car (serious) is the Honda Fit. TONS of room inside, fun to drive, and like 29/40 city/hwy. Best part is that they can be had new for under $18k, so I would imagine used would be even better.

I agree with this. I got tired of crappy gas mileage and still wanted to tow my 14.5' Chiquita with no problems. I will not be able to tow a 5th wheel with this but it gets 40 plus mpg on the highway, 33ish in town, 35 average mpg per tank and 20 plus mpg towing my boat. I will never have another gas motor again, this TDI 4cyllinder diesel runs like a champ, pulls the boat like it is not even attached and gets over 500 miles to a tank when on the highway, it only holds 13 gallons of diesel. I would not dream of having anything else.

My 2011 Forrester (with the new FB engine) is great. The 4 speed is a tough and smooth transmission. This cars loves 40-60 mph in-town driving. At those speeds I get low to mid 30's mpg. (which is most of my driving) Anything slower like heavy stop and go traffic is low twenties mpg. Hwy. speed over 70 also drops mpg down to upper twenties mpg. New under $20K

VW diesel. That is the way to go.
I put 4,886 miles on my Ford Escape this month without a problem, but a diesel gets much better mileage, so I would go that route.
I was born with nothing, and I have most of it left.

The newer Outbacks have been plagued by a steering vibration that has been an ongoing issue...I stopped following it after I bought the Forrester so it may be resolved now...just do research on the Outback forum before buying.

this.. American companies were hinting at having them this coming year.
Or get a hybrid and enjoy 3 or 4 battery changes.

Get something fun & sporty! You only live once! My vote is for a Tesla.
he better be under 5' 5". Plus I don't think he could drive that many miles with local trips within range of the Tesla.

no bueno on a vw. Engine might last a long time, but other crap goes wrong with them and nothing is cheap for them to fix or have someone fix.

Doug, disregard everything else here & go with the Tesla.

I now have over 250k on both a Toyota Tundra and a Toyota Landcruiser. Not good on gas though.

Motor week did a compare last year and the CRV got over 25mpg in mixed driving. I found their figures to be something attainable.

I have a customer who had a VW diesel last year and sold it because he could not keep it running. When it did, he got great mileage but I need something extremely reliable, I can't be breaking down in Seffner or Yeehaw Junction. I've never heard anyone say VW and reliability in the same sentence.

Chick, I like how you think but add a couple of income anchors, errr kids to the mix and talk to me:p

We have/had 5 CRV's in the family. SIL/2, my wife/2, and now BIL has one. LOVE `EM!!!

When I first got in. I thought it seemed small, but boy was I wrong. More room than a Jeep Wrangler or Toyo Forerunner, Especially the rear seat leg room. I also thought it leaned too much in a corner, but almost impossible to make it brake loose. We have had our first to 260K and this one is at 140K, It'll last forever. Mileage is good, but considering it CAN get out of its own way, it is sufficient.

The only thing I think they could improve on, is insulation from road noise, and that's it.

the complaints online for VW seem to be about other stuff breaking down, and expensive repairs. I'm interested in a anew Subaru Forrester. Are the repairs also costly? It is easy for the home mechanic to work on? do the spark plugs still sit on top or to the sides due to the flat engine?
