Went to a known spawning site for sheephead today with 3 friends,  2 of us on each side of the boat.  A total of 12 nice sheephad a bunch of short sheephead, 1 short hogfish, 2 short gags and 1 keeper mango were landed.  One side of the boat caught 1 fish, the other side caught all the rest.  Using similar tackle, techniques and the same bait.  PS.  I was the one on the short side that caught the 1 fish :(   We moved the boat several times and the other side continued to catch the fish

You don't own enough products from Yeti is my best guess.

How was the boat placement on the structure? How was the current flow? In witch detection was the flow? Port to starboard,  bow to stern,

Unless the current and wind change direction, one side of the boat is always going to be the down current side regardless of how many moves are made. So fish sensing the baits and moving toward them will always reach those baits first.  I see this phenomenon quite often.

When I was a kid mating on a head boat back in the early '60s, the captain was so aware of this that he would only book on side of the boat for bottom fishing unless the fishing was off the charts.  He was able to charge more per head than his competitors accordingly.

Maybe the boats shade was a factor. Do you smoke?

This is true for drift fishing, correct? Anchored up puts those toward the stern down current, right?
You should have been here yesterday

I don"t have an answer. I was a local park and there was a couple fishing from the bank. They were using the same setups and bait. The wife was catching one sheephead right after another and this went on for sometime. Eventually they exchanged fishing spots. The wife continued to catch fish, he did not. ???

The wind and current rarely run in the same direction.  So on an anchored boat, one side or the other will usually be closer to the down-current direction.  So one side or the other of the stern will be the best position.

Even when drift fishing with a boat that tracks sideways to the current (very few do this), the wind will move either the bow or stern more down-current than the other.

Used to fish for them a lot.  Sheepshead have extremely good eyesight - was your line thicker than theirs, colored, did you have any other tackle they didn't (swivel, bigger hook, snap, etc.).  The hand comment was a good one - they can smell suntan oil seemingly out of the air.  I used light clear mono & those snails I talked about here - only thing they went after without eyeing forever.

If anything, I downsized to lighter tackle, 20# braid (gray) tied to 6' 20# Fluoro, a 1/2 oz sinker and 20# fluoro leader.  They were using 30# braid, 25# mono leader and a 1 or 2 oz sinker All of us were using 2/0 circles and fresh dead frozen shrimp from the same bag

Sometimes it just is.  Some years ago a buddy, his wife and I were Trout fishing in a small mountain lake.  All using similar tackle, same lures and he was catching Trout one after the other.  His wife and I, standing beside him caught nothing.  We switched positions.  Nope.  Then we switched rods back and forth - and no touching of lures or line - we thought of that.  Nothing made any difference - he continued to catch fish and we didn't.  We still laugh about it.

Interesting.  I'll admit I'm stumped.  They were catching and you were not doesn't make sense - unless the fish were shallow and it was your boat side that the sun outlined you or your shadow.  Only other thing I can think of.  PS: fished the same water type for years (Hernando Beach since 1962 - I'm gone and so is it).

Sometimes, it is just luck. I am not much of a gambler but my wife loves slot machines. I have observed that sometimes  a person can play a certain machine for hours without luck and the next person sits down and hits a jackpot after a few minutes. Sometimes fishing is the same way. I once was on a Long Range trip out of San Diego once fishing side by side with the "regulars" and I would get bit more often than them. Not that I was doing anything different than them but it was my day. The next day wasn't.

I was going to ask about the shaded side too.  Which side had the shade?

Last year 4 of us were fishing the same side of the boat toward the structure.  My brother caught all the sheepshead.  Same baits same set up.  Very odd.
