It’s tough on artificial , if you really want to catch one, domestic shiner from the bait store or catch a small bream and toss him out there on a bobber. Keep in mind a gar has a really small mouth and will walk with the bait for a long time before turning it and eating it.
My first question is why do you want to catch them? Seems like a headache unless you are trophy fishing for Gator Gar. The gar will have to nearly swallow the bait and hook if you want to catch them.
That video is well done, but I gotta say, that's the cleanest, most spotless fishing boat I've ever seen. Even his gloves were spotless. Hope to get a chance to try that one day.
You can drag a weightless worm across their snout and they will bite. Twitch it while they hold it and they will try to kill it and swallow it. Not easy but I've won a few trashfish pots in my bass club doing it.
They'll also hit a trolled plug, but it needs to be WAY behind the boat and moving slowly - trolling motor speed. Hooks need to be as sharp as you can hone them in order to grab and penetrate. But the combed out nylon rope works best for Gar, but that's all you can get on it. A 3 strand twisted nylon rope will be easier to unravel than a braided one.
MY WORST FEAR......THAT WHEN I DIE MY WIFE WILL SELL ALL MY BOATS & FISHING GEAR FOR WHAT I TOLD HER I PAID FOR IT.......
I may not always agree with what you say,
but I will always respect your right to be wrong!

For the same reason any of us want to catch anything!
