Sea bass question

kayjay90kayjay90 FlaglerPosts: 67 Deckhand
been having a hard time targeting any sea bass this year... I hear some reports of guys catching them but we have had no luck.

what type of bottom should I be looking for and what depths?
time of year seems to be the colder months?
im assuming a chicken rig, smaller hook and squid work well?

thanks in advance I alway look forward to learning different strategies.

Should be on ledges anywhere at this point in the winter...use cuddle fish and jigs...drift

I found large ones all over the place in 85 feet, any structure using just a dropper rig squid.

it seems like I’ve been to deep, we’re usually 150ft+

Yeah...come inshore some....On the way back from deep water, stop and snag some delicious bass

I can share how not to find them right now. Took my 18' flats boat out on Sunday to 9 mile and Pop Warner areas. Never caught the first sea bass. Caught 50+ red snapper, including some in the 10-15 pound range, a couple sharks and brought home 2 lane snapper, including one really nice one.

Tried squid, frozen sardines, live shrimp, live grunts, Gulps on a jig head...

Would love to hear from the masters. Was I just too shallow in 60-70 feet?
