It's still too early to say on Gene. Give him a year to up the offense and see what happens. With 17 guys on injuried reserve, it's hard to blame him for everything.
The only issue I see is that making it difficult for any coach who might want personnel authority, which a big name experienced coach may want. We'll see.
Gene was responsible for a total rebuild of the defense and if you aren't happy with the defense, you are not being fair. Offense...work in progress, QB who has had about 10 weeks of NFL experience. Maybe the worst recieving corps in the league. A Pro Bowl tight end who can't catch. I have a suggestion, quit complaining and give em a chance. The complainers got what they wanted, Jack is gone. Try not complaining for while, it would be refreshing.
I guess your definition of "too early" differs from mine. If it were just one season, I'd agree. But "too early" is not 2 years and 11 months.
And it's an interesting gesture by an owner on his way out. I wonder if Khan had any input?
So in your opinion, one should build a championship roster in three drafts?
Sure seems like if Khan wanted Gene gone, he'd have not been renewed. Let him get the kid some weapons and better protection and see what happens. His career will be based on Blaine Gabbert being a success or failure, unless they dump him before next season. He might get a pass for a new QB.
Clever. "Championship roster" is your word, not mine.
In my opinion, which as far as I can tell matters the same as yours does since neither of us have experience running an NFL team and are just blabbering on a fishy chat room about a football team, it doesn't take more than 3 years to determine the success or failure of a person's work resume. Particularly a person who in one role or another has been with the franchise for 12+ years.

Then we have a difference of opinion and there's nothing wrong with that. The people who DO have experience running an NFL team are stricking with Smith. Not saying it's right, the jury is obviously still out, but someone else echos those sentiments down at Everbank.

Fair enough.
But the people with NFL experience running a team that you are referring to is essentially just Weaver (the check signer), who's on his way out. So that's not exactly a glowing stamp of approval. The Jaguars haven't had a season that could be labeled a winning success in some time. So maybe the people with NFL experience running a team that you put so much faith in aren't the best at judging whether Smith deserves an extension or not.
{conspiracy theory incoming} As I stated, Smith has been with the franchise a long time. He's probably a favorite of Weaver who has promoted him through the ranks. So one way of looking at the extension is like a lame duck president pardoning someone on his way out of the office. "I'm leaving anyway, let's give my boy Smith an extension." {end of silly conspiracy theory}
The articles I've read are conflicting. Some say Weaver is just selling a "controlling interest." Others say Weaver is "selling the team." Those aren't necessarily the same. Anyone know which it is?
