Lobstering middle Keys

I have been hunting for lobster many years while staying on Cudjoe Key. We have always gone to the bay side and dove the passes. It was slim pickings this year. I have never tried diving on the Atlantic side and to be clear, I'm not asking for numbers but what do you look for? On the Bay side we look for ledges and holes. For those who dive on the Atlantic side, what do you look for and at what depth are you looking?

Along the reef edge is a good start if you are scuba. Also if you are dragging a spotter around, have had good luck in the sand holes if there is an undercut at the grass lines. Those are few and hard to find though.

I do Scuba. When you say reef, I think of coral reefs like Looe key and Sombrero. Is that the type of reef you are saying?

The "reef" refers to the main reef line where it drops off to 100 feet deep.

Duh! Look for the trap buoys. That might be a good place to start looking. The commercial guys don't put traps in a desert! DO NOT mess with a trap!

I checked a ton of spots in bay off Marathon saturday. Not even a sign of a lobster. Same month and days of year last year. Found plenty of legals last year and probably 1000 shorts. Zero so far.

Cudjoe area is a hell of a lot better than Marathon.

If you go out southwest there’s a lot more territory and less pressure. There is also tremendous bottom out that way in some places. You could never cover it all, and marking most of the places is obsolete.
