Anyone have any info on where I could take a local boating classes that teach basic boaters safety/education for someone new to boating? Im in Lakeland, but anywhere in the Tampa Bay area would work.
Gulfport marina around there on the point they have them.
When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work, because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation!

I took a coast guard course at the auxilary down by the pier eons ago. I would assume they still run it. I think it was something like a 6 week course 1-2 hours each week but it was a long time ago. But you might check with them.

I'll contact a buddy of mine to see where his kids took their's - it was somewhere in Lakeland/Winter Haven - covered basic rules, common light colors, etc.
You can find several classes offered by the USCG Auxiliary here http://www.cgaux7.org/index7.htm?page=public . Just click on the Boating Program link at the left of the page. You may also want to contact Flotilla 74 in Brandon 1-800-7044216. They have a Polk detachment that may be closer for you.
Great people in the Auxiliary with tons of recreational, commercial and military experience that you can learn from. The ABS (About Boating Safety) course also meets State of FL, NASBLA and USCG requirements for boating safety (i.e. the Bobber card required to operate a vessel in state waters).
This is the one I had my kids take years ago, I went with them and it was an excellent course.
You'll learn things you need to know like navigating without your electronics, radio use, etc.
THERE SHOULD BE NO COMMERCIAL FISHING ALLOWED FOR ANY SPECIES THAT IS CONSIDERED OVERFISHED.
