Anyone ever try this? Looks like it would be a great fight on the fly rod if I can get them to hit. I was thinking of tying up a bread fly and give it a shot. Any other flies they might hit.
Floridasportsman has done an article on this and I think some others have as well. very small white flies if I remember correctly. I tried targeting them once but with no success. I have caught a few on fly buts its always randomly on a flat. They fight hard for their size. A big horse mullet on a 5wt would probably be pretty epic.
i used to find them feeding in some of the outfalls with a lot of green algae. i would use a small bonefish fly & **** it up so it would float & then let it drift in the current. they don't jump tho which was a surprise. i have heard you can chum them with bread but have not tried it........
When I was a kid (about 60 years ago) we caught lots of mullet on tiny bread balls and minnow hooks with a cane pole. Both fresh and saltwater. My uncle had a huge smoker and could smoke 100 lbs at a clip. Not much better than smoked mullet and a cold brew.
