Lake Talquin

Anybody know anything about it?

 A bunch of us are heading down Friday am to fish the weekend and I don't really have a clue about the place.

I'm sure I can figure it out but any insight would be appreciated. Mainly bream/catfish. I'm not a big bass and/or crappie fishing fan.

Bream and catfish can be caught all over the lake. The Iron Curtain is a good spot to start. If you put in at Coe's Landing the Iron Curtain is right there to the east. It is a wall of trees a couple hundred yards long. Should be a number of boats already on it. You can fish all around the Iron Curtain and head up into the river area. If you stay to the east / south east it will get shallow 2-4' and less if you press up in to the shallows. It's a beautiful area, lots of gators, Ospreys and Eagles. Be careful when you go into the coves around the lake. Lots of submerged stumps. Drop off plane and idle to your spot. Lots of good fishing just go slow and look for the stumps. You will see some boats blasting by, you can follow them - they know the channel to run.

Thanks. We will be at Lake Talquin Lodge. If anybody is around give us a holler. We got the old block rooms rented right up from the ramp.

Just know there are stump fields in the lake. I've been a couple of times with an older guy that fished it all the time. He did put of on the bedding bream. The beds were in the main lake just out of the mouth of the Little River,

Haven't done that in years.

Shinner under a cork at night is how we used to do it.

There are lots of stumps in the lake.

When you pass over a large bedding area, the smell of fish will just about make you gag.

Been said several times but can’t be emphasized enough...it’s a massively stumpy lake.

Had a good weekend. No bedding fish as we were between the moons but we did manage some good fish in the pads.

6 boats and no one hit a stump while running except my BIL. He was running his trolling motor and hit something with it and broke it loose from the mounting.

I can imagine him when he said he threw his rod down and dove on his belly for the front deck and caught it before it got away. Had to be comical to say the least. Remounted in a different position and back on the water in an hour or so.

I learned a lot about the lake and will be going back.

Glad a good time was had by all. I was a little worried about being between the moon phases. They started bedding on the lake here I'm told.

Don't remember the date/year, but think it was back in the very early 70's, Lake Talquin was drained bone dry and logging crews logged out  large sections of dead and down timber that was still preserved in the mud. Think I'm correct in saying this, but possibly not: when the Lake was initially flooded timber was not in any demand, so it was simply cut down and left lying on the Lake Bottom. The Dam was built back in the Depression era or maybe just before, and an old Mentor of mine, Miller Walston, Tallahassee City Engineer at the time, was one of a party of 12 who designed the whole "shooting match". Miller designed the electric generators (3 I think) that had WOODEN bearings made out of Lignum vide. These wooden bearings are still in place in the generators to this day! I remember seeing the Lake about bone-dry, and it is full of stumps beyond belief! Striper fishing below the Dam used to be a really Big event!
