Titusville flats fishing

Saturday was a good day of fishing in the lagoon at Titusville. While I put a dozen fish in the boat, it's the ones that got away I can't quit thinking about. This should have been my best day ever for trout over 20". Hopefully I'll learn from my mistakes, starting with the purchase of a landing net. See video below.

Get a net with rubber coated mesh. You won't have to spend an hour digging hooks out of the net.

Nice Trout.  Live and learn, next time you will have the rubber coated net.

Looks like it was still a really good day despite losing some fish. I have the landing net, but half the time forget to bring it with me. Actually rolled my kayak last weekend trying to land a big redfish.  Somehow it didn't end in the "one that got away" story. I am also upping my leader. I have been running 20lb fluoro fishing for trout but have had several big snook break me off recently. I am bumping up to 30lb and hoping that will keep them on the line.

Net is key. Maybe get a rod with moderate action if you don't have one. Most fast action rods have liitle to no flex in the tip. You need that mod action or soft tip for fish, especially trout, that thrash hard at the boat. I use the Riptide Mullet almost exclusively, but the sardine is not poured correctly. The head is upside down with the wider part on top. The tail action is not as good as the mullet. Enjoyed the vid. Dirty water huh?

Water looks like its still a mess but nice to see trout in that area!  Way to go!

Great video! Definitely gotta take your time on those bigger trout.  Light drags, soft rods, and mono helps prevent pulled hooks.  My favorite trout setup was a baitcaster setup with 14lb Stren clear/blue mono.  Super Spook topwaters or 4" swimbaits.
