Need help with pop up ads

I have a recent and on going problem with pop up ads. They occur anytime I walk the phone as well as when using it regardless of site. Normally one ad pops up, I close it and there is a second, close it then it is good for a few minutes and happens again.

I have installed an ad blocker and malware bytes to no avail. I have turned off all notifications with the exception of email, IM but that hasn't helped.

I'm at wits end and am tempted to do a factory reset to see if that fixes it. I don't have many apps, no games, just some news apps. 

Any advice is appreciated. 

P.S. phone is a Samsung Galaxy S7 on att service

If you can't fix it, considering buying an Apple next time you have the opportunity to refresh your device.  They don't suffer from that problem.

Yes they do, Apple, like Samsung, had to send out instructions to fix the issue. Every phone brand has the problem.

They do, but if I have understood him, that's not the ones he's getting.

His problems sounded more to me like those present in the OS than those related to popups in a browser -- and to that end, you're right both of them have issues.

However, Android suffers much more from adware in the OS rather than just the browser, and that's what I was referring to.

But perhaps we might ask directly:  Parker, are you getting pop ups only while using your browser, or more generally when using your phone and not browsing?

I have never heard of popup ads outside the internet browser. Not sure what you are talking about. 

I googled it and that was an issue with older android operating systems and apparently has been addressed and fixed. Maybe Parker has an older operating system, but he should be able to fix that by upgrading his OS. 

He may have malware, but malware bytes should catch that if he is scanning all his apps.

I hadn't either, until my GF handed me her phone about a year ago and asked me to get rid of it.

But you're right it was a while ago, so perhaps they have fixed it and/or a quick update to Android will fix it.

The pop ups are random. When the phone has been dormant and I wake it up I get the ads. It happens when the phone rings or might happen while on this site.

As I suspected, it sounds like you have an OS infestation of adware/malware.  I would try first to update the OS like Cad suggested, then if that doesn't work, try more malware removal programs, then barring that reload the OS from scratch.  I had to do the latter to salvage my GF's phone....and don't forget to back up your contacts before you do.

Thanks, I did a factory reset which cured the problem. I have very few apps on the phone so it was no big deal.
