Sleeping on the boat in the Bahamas

How safe is it to sleep on the boat, on the hook, not at a marina?  I've seen videos of folks staying on sailboats and cabin cruisers but was wondering how safe it was aside from the weather.  I have heard stories of boat thefts at some marinas which made me wonder about safety.

How wealthy do you look? The more fancy the boat the more you become a target. If you have Yamaha's on the back of your boat they will be watching you. I have been on the hook many times with no problems. Normally raft up with other boats in a group or have a lot of people on the boat. If you don't have AC the bugs can be bad in a marina and a lot nicer on the hook.

We sleep on the boat at anchor every summer near Sandy Cay, Grand Cay (Wells Bay) and Strangers.  Never had any issues with any of the boats over the years (mercury, yamaha and inboard power).
