Winter crossing to the Bahamas

StratCasterStratCaster Posts: 115 Deckhand
I've tried to schedule a trip the last two summers but my schedule has been too busy.  I have a lot of time off around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.  Has anyone traveled to the Bahamas in the winter?  Are there special considerations for that time of year?

depends on boat size.  I tell people who go with me in the summer, conditions might make the crossing uncomfortable, not unsafe.  Winter can be very unsafe...cold front comes through with 20 mph North wind that flows against the Gulf Stream, can stack it up to 8ft+ in a heart beat

seas typically are rougher.  what got me is that the days are shorter.  when you are use to coming back late and cooking your catch at 8 or 9 pm.  when it's winter, the sun is setting 6 pm or so.

I have made more winter trips than I can count, you just need to be flexible ,
With that being said the fishing can be amazing.

That is the key. You may have a date in mind and then it blows for 2 weeks. You just have to be ready when the window opens.

We make a lot of short weekend trips for Wahoo in the winter and have had calmer seas than in the summer.  No afternoon thunderstorms to worry about.  Typically we do short weekend trips so the weather is pretty predictable.  Our rule is to avoid anything days with N wind in the forecast.
