Woah... Cant they just spin the wind mills faster??  Those pesky fossil fuels, who needs them!!

SoCalGas issued a gas curtailment watch on Monday, notifying customers to be prepared to reduce gas use if needed, with power generators expected to burn more fuel this week than usual to keep air conditioners humming.

Probably so since the Japanese did not know  what a thermometer was 107 years ago.

(This article, originally published Tuesday, was updated Wednesday to add all-time heat records at Mount Washington, N.H., and Tbilisi, Georgia set since Monday. On Thursday, the story was updated to include information on heat-related deaths in Canada and extraordinary heat in Siberia. On Friday, it was updated to add the likely all-time heat record in Africa and Southern California.)

In 1988, James Hansen warned the nation about climate change. Decades later, is American public opinion finally catching up?

This summer marks 30 years since Hansen’s famous warning. Since then, we’ve been cautioned about the threats of climate change countless times and heard overwhelming evidence that it’s caused by humans. In these three decades, according to a recent report by the Associated Press, average temperatures in the United States have risen by 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Ski season has become less reliably snowy, and summer heat waves more common. We’ve witnessed multiple megastorms, like hurricanes Sandy, Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Wildfires, especially in the Western U.S., are routinely larger and more violent than in the past.

Easy enough to move the thermometer to get a few extra degrees.  Highest temperature ever?  I assume you just mean this time around?  Not counting 50,000 years ago?

Beats the heck out of freezing!

Is it too early for me to warn everyone about the next impending ice age?

    Florida hit 109 in 1931
    Alaska was 100 in 1915
    Arizona was 128 in 1994
    Georgia was 112 in 1989
    Alabama was 112 in 1925
    Maine was 105 in 1911
South carolina was 113 in 2012
South Dakota was 120 in 1936
    Virginia hit 110 in 1954
Rhode island hit 104 in 1975
    Nevada 125 in 1994

If you look at a lot of dates from the table, seems heat waves have been around and have actually gotten less powerful, some were even tied from previous records set even earlier in time.

One thing that is common with a lot of high and low temperatures I come across are that they are usually less than 200 years old. Making the sample size extraordinarily small and not really random.

Not only are they not random, they aren’t really relevant either. Something about not taking temperatures all over the world for eons.

    Ever heard of the "dustbowl"?
Wasn't the dustbowl more about the lack of precipitation than temperature?

The dustbowl was caused by farmers and drought.

And 1934 was the hottest year on record.

I did and temperature wasn't mentioned.  Lack of rain and farming practices were.  But fair enough, we can call it a tertiary contributor.  Which means it wasn't a primary contributor as you seemed to imply, which was my point.  Hopefully I didn't lose you.  :)

I was just reading this mornings weather forecast and it talked about the Caribbean water temperatures being 2 degrees below normal averages for this time of year.. Whichever humans caused this to happen, thank you for what you're doing to help reduce hurricane intensity and frequency.
