Catch & Release....

Works.  But before I explain that I will do a report on #56.
I get to the ramp at 5:10 and get parking spot #1. I love that. Get launched and decide to run the long way to my spots down south.
As I head down I try a dock light on a whim. I put a very nice Trout in the boat on the second cast of the white CAL. OK, that gets one monkey off my back and allows a bit of different strategy. I keep heading south and and hit a couple spots and get a small snook. I also get a pretty beefy Bluefish. I relocate and hit a spot that can give up a Red...but the first fish is a small snook...then...

She was in less than a foot of water and lucky for me the tide was too low..and she was too big to get in the mangroves.
A little over 35 inches.
I keep banging along with soft plastic and get 2 more small snook and see 2 Reds together but they have no interest in the CAL.
It is getting light enough to see a little better so I take one of the three fingers I have left over from yesterday and pin one on.
I head to the spot I fished the other morning ...that had the pod of big Reds on it...and I have been good about staying off of them
so that they won't leave. I get in where I can see...and see a smaller red..but no take...I move up and look...and under an overhang there is a good fish. I wait and get a good shot at the eating end...and..

Does she look familiar...She did to me..I check my phone ...

Look at my shorts....  Same fish caught several days later...

So....  catch & release works

That makes #56 and I catch one more small snook before spending a not insignificant amount of time getting 8 or so good baits for the morning. On the trailer at 9:25
Ramp...was a horror show...people slipping & falling in the water launching...other dummies parking a car in a trailer slot...
Tomorrow....back to normal I hope.

Boy that may be the last time I fish on the 4th of July. Ramp was a real circus. The 4th seems to bring out more people than any other holiday. Anyway it was a short day for me, back by 11:30. 4 snook,2 small reds,a trout,2 ladies,3/4 snapper, Glad to see the water staying clear into the summer this year.

I told you it was a horror show..... But I have to admit...I did chuckle a bit when the guy fell in.

Today I was a little later than yesterday but still got parking spot #1.  I headed to my first spot...which was the dock light I caught the trout on...and lost a nice one (dumb...lifting it) at the boat but did catch a Trout and a mangrove snapper on the CAL. I started to head north and bumped into Topwater guy and he said his spot was empty. I kinda knew the water was not looking good up there but wanted to try two outgoing tide spots...lost one small snook but knew looking at the water I had to go. Started back south and got a big jack off a point. kept moving and caught a snook...then got three more all in one area.

Every day is not 3 foot long snook...some days they are 2 footers...

I kept throwing the CAL but eventually there was enough sun to sight fish. I saw a single Red and was refused....then refused by a pair of Reds. I caught another snook....and as I got down the shoreline...I saw a Red.
This time I got the take...

So, It was 8:45 and that is #57 ...went and looked at a couple places but now the wind was up...Tried for an hour to get a few good baits...got 5 so ...on the trailer at 10.

Still banging along.  Man, I really love sliding along in the dark...the temps are the best of the day. I hit the ramp at 5:15 today and again get parking spot #1....I like that. I head to my first spot and have a trout pull off on the CAL and catch a ladyfish.... second spot I get a hit but no connect...third spot same thing. I get to my fourth spot...one I have never been to before and get a nice over slot Trout. Too dark for a pic.  It is greying up so I run to look at a spot that I am giving to a young friend who has a tournament tomorrow...Toss the chug bug and loose a nice trout but catch this 20 incher.

Leave it so I don't sore mouth them...
A quick move and I pull a little foot long snook off a point....
Try one more spot but now can notice the water looks junky...get moving.
Get to my next spot and get a big upgrade on snook...

It may be a dinner fish come September...close to that 28 line on the board.
Pull another snook and keep banging along with the CAL because there is so much cloud cover I cannot sight fish...Get another small snook on the CAL. I decide to pin on a finger and try and find a Red. Not seeing anything and am wondering if it is not going to work out...see one about 9 AM when we get a little more sun but get refused.
Getting late and look at my watch...9:45...May have to take the zero in the Red column... I look ahead and see a decent snook up under the mangroves....and since once you pin a finger on a hook...he's pretty well doomed and won't live long...I make the pitch. The snook stays still but a Red zooms out of nowhere and inhales it...

Not a lot to say about today other than I managed #59 for a seven in a row streak.
Got #1 parking spot at 5:15 and was off to hit a few spots... at my third spot I hook up a real nice trout but she shakes off boatside....ugh. Lots of looking and tossing the CAL to likely spots but it is almost an hour and 15 minutes before I pull a nice trout in. I decide to run to get in better conditions and pull a little foot long snook and then a nice 22 incher. Switch up to get a Redfish and hit a lot of likely places with no luck. It is almost 8 and I can see a bit so I pin on a finger mullet and start the search.  I bump a nice trout and jump off another snook before I get my fish..

just over 27 inches... 8:45 and look for a few baits to start the morning with...but they were very scarce...took too long and I only got a couple...but it only takes one if you're lucky.

Today...was almost worse than yesterday...but I still put away #60 and 8 in a row.
I was a bit late again...stayed up late watching the demolition derby at Daytona.
My first three spots were a blank... Finally at grey dawn I started throwing the chug bug...and lost a nice trout boatside...again...then, I get a small trout...I decide to finish out the spot and get a huge gafftop...which unlike the trout is stuck solid. I make a HUGE mistake trying to lift it in not wanting it all tangled up in my landing net....and break the line and loose the chug bug.
I hit a bunch is spots and nothing.....I finally pull a little foot long snook off a point...and a 18 incher off the other side of the point. It's early and I decide I will go try the big Redfish bush since I rested it a few days. I get in and they are not there....but...they are 50 ft down ...near a big dangerous pile of hurricane blow downs.  Since they were not really moving I decide to try....I get the take but she just bulldozes right into the stuff and breaks me off.  I keep at it and just before 9 I pick this little guy up...

I leave and decide to hit a few spots I have not been....but it was clear the bite was done...even little 18- 20 inch snook were refusing finger mullet.  I spent 20 minutes with two nice top slot Reds under a bush...they just would not eat. Quit at 10...but I spent another hour getting 6 good baits for tomorrow.

Yesterday was still a grind....I worked hard but the streak broke...No Red. I saw 2.
Also, I have lost the location of the better size snook. I think it is due to the change in the water. It has gotten crappy looking down south from the rain I guess. I finished the day with 2 Trout 2 mangrove snapper(on chug bug) 4 snook.

Today,  I decided I would not go south. That was kinda forced on me since there was a pretty big storm with a lot of lightning coming in at Wabasso before dawn. It kinda worked out. I started tossing the chug bug and caught a couple ladies in the dark. As it broke grey I caught a Trout. The whole time I'm eyeballin' this storm. The lightning has dropped out so I start edging my way south. I get lucky and pull my Red early on the white CAL

So, with that done ...no way I'm letting a snook hold me out...and I kept telling myself that. A giant gafftop and then another trout. I finally feel it is safe enough to run south a bit and I hit a spot that doesn't disappoint most days...not big..but a snook

After that it was anticlimactic....several more snook but at 10:10 the wind dies and the sun came out...

    Nothing great ...3 trout 5 snook and a red....but that's number 61....

Another slam today... But today an old timer (yes...older than me ) was at the ramp ahead of me....I did not get parking space #1. Chuck is 85 years old so anyone who can get up that early and still go fishing at that age...deserves the spot.
I was not able to get anything going in the dark but as it greyed up I caught two nice Trout...but lost my chug bug.

I probably should have just put on another chug bug and stayed and enjoyed catching more fish but I knew I needed to get going...even so... it took a long time to find just one little snook.....I also caught 3 more trout on the CAL. I took a look at a lot of places up by Sebastian but only saw one real big Trout up shallow....hours tick by...I'm getting hot and sweaty and not feeling like I am going to be able to score...it's half past 10...One last spot...and it was the charm.

    so...that's 62....on the trailer at 10:50

    Nice work Joe!

Your grinding it out day-to-day gives me hope that there are still enough fish around to make it worth taking the skiff off the lift!

Some day I'll get back up there and catch stripers on surface poppers...relive a childhood memory.
