I've never thought they had an upset stomach because they barfed the grass afterwards. Sometimes they don't barf. But I always can tell something is off even before they eat the grass.
I've never seen a dog that didn't occasionally eat grass.
If I ever had a dog that didn't eat grass, I don't remember it.
Dogs eat things because they like the taste or smell.......that's it. Don't overthink it.
Dogs roll in stinky stuff because they like the smell. It smells bad to you but good to them. Smell some dog food, dry or wet, and see how you like it.

Yea it's my golden. He's randomly eating grass (well the weeds). He recently got shaved (long story- was upset when I saw it) , so maybe he's sick from that.
Our Viszla eats grass every afternoon. Sometimes throws up sometimes not. Our Pomeranian eats cat poop and her own poop sometimes. We have to really watch her. She looks for dead worms to roll around on.

The reasons I’ve read and heard dogs eat grass are ( no one knows for sure) one theory is that grass is a natural dewormer and dogs eat grass to help with parasitism ( which is often followed by vomiting ), another is that is makes them vomit like sticking your finger down your throat. Another was that it had some natural anti nausea properties, the last is that they need more fiber. The last 2 are the least accepted by veterinarians. Mine do it all the time and aren’t sick, or infected with parasites and are on an excellent diet with appropriate fiber. Hope this helps
My dogs definitely go on a mission to eat grass at certain times. One of them can be inside whimpering to go out and when they're let out they make a b-line to certain grasses and start eating. Then they puke a short time later. Like others have said, I was taught that they do it on purpose when they've ate something that disagrees with them and they want to puke it out.

If that were the case why do I need to worm the horses?

It varies by breeds and conditions they're under.
My granddaddy told me 50 years ago this is what dogs and cats do when sick. May be a old wives tale for all I know.
My pug was a poop eater. Man that grossed me out, especially because pugs love licking people.
All our poms love rolling on stinky dead worms. What's with that Johnny? The rainy season brings lots of rotting worms.
Not only that but that rotting flesh smell I smell when disposing of the rotting flesh has to be a bigger tip off.
Old Bear didn't eat grass, or lizards, or anything really nasty, he just drank pool water occasionally, no big deal.
