Red Meat Allergies Caused By Tick Bites Are On The Rise

There's still a lot to learn about the alpha-gal allergy. Alpha gal is a sugar that animals — including cows, pigs and lamb — make in their bodies. "As humans, we don't make this alpha gal sugar," Commins explains. "We all make an immune response to it." So, how does a tick bite cause the allergy?

It's possible that ticks inject humans with alpha gal when they bite. The ticks likely get it from feeding off wild animals, such as mice or squirrels, that also carry alpha gal. Or it's possible that ticks activate the response in another way.

"Whatever the tick is doing, it seems that it's a very potent awakener for our immune system to produce antibodies, "Commins says. "And in this case, it's antibodies to this very particular sugar in red meat."

Laura Stirling now avoids all red meat and dairy. "As soon as I stopped, I was fine, I felt great," she says.

I got Lyme about 10 years ago. The majority opinion is that Lyme is pretty weak and dies easy with treatment. The minority opinion is that once a person has Lyme, it lives in the system for life, based on a person having some symptoms for life and several reoccurrences of the infection. A theory I heard recently from the majority camp is that although the bacteria itself dies fast, the antibodies procuded from the infection are the actual cause of the chronic systems, not the bacteria itself. That theory makes a lot of sense to me and is the theory I gravitate towards.

I have a buddy who has had it since 2000. Got it in Florida.

It manifested one night in Montana after some big **** steaks. Threw up on my tent. We where riding Mountain bikes from Canada to Mexico.

There are a number of tick-borne diseases in the USA. About 32 or 33 in Florida by last count. The Mayo Clinic over in Jacksonville is known world-wide as the most advanced medical authority with tick diseases---saved my life in 1992 when I came down with Monocythic ehrlichiosis --2nd known person in Fl. at the time to have contracted the disease, and the other died from it. Don't mess around with tick diseases---go to the Mayo Clinic! Local medics can think no further than "Lyme Disease" in most cases---32 or 33 isolated by Mayo to date! Remember that!

Sawyer Bug Repellant for spraying your boots and clothes is what I use.  You can get it in Walmart.  I have been using it for years and do not ever get ticks, even while sitting on the ground in the hardwood swamps for hours.  It is odorless once dry and they say it lasts for several washes, but I reapply by every 4th wash or so.  It even repells mosquitoes, even though they will still buzz all around you and chiggers.  I can remember back when I was little my dad made us rub powdered sulphur on our legs to keep them off...  The diseases are bad and I certianly dont want one!

X 2 on permethrin, active ingredient in Sawyer's.  It works on ticks and chiggers and works well.  Never had a tick-borne illness but for some reason I seem to attract them.  I asked God to make me a chick magnet but the request must have been garbled during transmission.

Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.

As the climate warms it will spread.  Mother Nature wants us to eat more veggies.  You should obey your Mother.

You will get rich if you modify a strain of cattle DNA so they don't produce this chemical.  Very possible to do, might not even be that hard.  Remember this post - I will want my royalties a few years from now.

I had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever when I was 15 years old, ended up in the hospital for a week.

8 years ago had a tick on my back, pulled it and went on with life...
Two weeks later the bite swelled up and I ran a high fever and had intense bone and joint pain.
Dr said I had a systemic reaction to the tick bite and could reoccur at any time.

I had a lone star tick on me this past turkey season, no problems.....................................yet
I am glad to only be a bird hunter with bird dogs...being a shooter or dog handler or whatever other niche exists to separate appears to generate far too much about which to worry.

Gardawg, just because Monsanto gave us Agent Orange and spliced genes of other living organisms into corn, you don't think they would try to give us bunnychicks, do you?
