Welcome to the future of hunting - having to wait 2 to 5+ years for a 3-4-5 day quota hunt. That's a bunch of baloney but we have 20+ million folks in this state and some of them like to hunt.
The hunter numbers are falling say the outdoors writers and personalities...the sky is falling. Nope - hunter opportunities are at an all time low. It is just that some folks don't come back when they can't play.
I didn't pull archery, muzzle or gun for the quota managed wma I've been learning. What a crock. Not even one!
I did pull a wild hog BUT it is for a dog hunt (which wasn't clear at all when I selected it as a choice. Not without cross referencing the date on goflorida with a date in a brochure. Which I had no idea I needed to do. I thought I was applying for a quota hunt for hogs period. The other dates I selected were still hunts...)
Can I still hunt even if I'm not using dogs? I don't mind them and do believe it will help keep the hogs moving around. Or would that be a bad idea?
I'll probably just turn it back in anyway because it's not on a property I know...

Spangler - use the hog hunt - the other guys' dogs will keep em moving around, giving you a better opp. Or you could invite a couple dog guys and learn something new.
You have just experienced why so many folks are just so excited about FL hunting and the junk that goes with it. The guy above has been waiting 5 years for something and got 0.
I pulled a dog hog hunt too - they allow 3 guys on those permits. And an archery deer hunt near home - might be a good thing if it isn't 90 degrees out.
Guana Archery and Muzzleloader (Most likely will end up returning archery due to poor planning on my part), Caravelle Ranch N Gen Gun, and Jennings for Wild hog. I'm pretty happy.. Need to learn Caravelle a little better prior to
Didn't get pulled for the St. Vincent Sambar hunt, but it was my first year so I wasn't expecting to get pulled. Anyone on here have any idea how long it typically takes to get a slot?

You don’t build preference points on special opportunity hunts! Your just as likely to draw on your first attempt as any other. Only regular quota hunts builds points.
I drew Archery, Muzzleloader and General Gun. Then again I had 5 preference points because i was previously in leases and returned to get preference points for a year i was between leases (this year). Another thing wrong with the system.. You should be able to apply for preference point and not take permit so it does not go to random redraw.

didnt draw any archery so looks like imma be sticking Georgia deer with bow, but I drew my 4th choice for general gun up at Cary. Which just so happens to be the closest WMA to me, so there is that lol. Havent scouted it at all but I guess imma be busy

Not completely true. Yes, you can draw your first year, but you do build preference points. This is my 3rd year putting in for the sambar hunt. I still didn't draw, but I now have 3 preference points. Most people put in as a group and it is based off of the person in your group with the lowest preference points.
From the FWC site: If you apply during Phase I and are unsuccessful, you will be awarded one Saint Vincent Island NWR Sambar Deer preference point for next year (even if you get issued a permit in Phase II). Preference points are cumulative and you will receive one additional Saint Vincent Island NWR Sambar Deer preference point each year you apply in Phase I and are unsuccessful. If you apply during Phase I next year, and are drawn for a Saint Vincent Island NWR Sambar Deer permit, your Saint Vincent Island NWR Sambar Deer preference points will be reset to zero, even if you fail to purchase your permit by the deadline. No preference points are awarded if you fail to apply in Phase I. If you fail to apply during Phase I for two consecutive years, your preference points will be reset to zero.
