North Captiva Report (with Tarpon)

Thursday night arrived at N. Captiva with a greeting by the no-see-ums in Force
Friday morning, my 5 year old son and I left N. Cap and went to catch bait. While I was chumming, my son was throwing a lure. First cast a trout follwed by several catfish. Two throws of the net and we were loaded with beautiful whitebait. No ballyhoo as cited on this forum.
Back to the dock for breakfast with my wife and other son and infant daughter. Unfortunately, almost all of our bait died. I believe it was related to a sunscreen application on my fairskinned kid.
After breakfast I took my 5 and 9 year old sons out. We tried in vain to catch bait again. Got hot and took a swim. THen drifted Captiva pass with jigheads and gulps and caught about 8 small grouper.
Home for lunch and a nap. Went out to the beach at Cayo Costa for snorkeling and seining with my wife and all of our kids in the afternoon. Saw a couple of snook while snorkeling was cool.

Saturday morning, up early with my 5 year old fishing partner. Caught a few baits including a couple catfish.
WHile chumming the prior day, I had seen two boats fighting tarpon in the distance and had seen some tarpon rolling around us. I only had one big pole and I threw out a big pogie or menhaden. When I checked it, it was cut in half by a shark. I threw out a cut catfish and proceeded to land a huge tarpon. My son took pictures until the camera ran out of batteries:

In the afternoon, again picked up the rest of the family and went to Cayo Costa for snorkeling the beach. Unfortunately, my power pole spike broke on the beach. In the afternoon, my son and I drifted the pass. It was difficult as the tide was going out but the wind was coming in. We caught a few drifting crabs, saw one rolling tarpon but then got chased to the dock by a storm that never arrived.

Sunday morning we needed to be home by 8AM to get to an engagement in town in the afternoon. My 5 year old and I again got up at sunrise and went back to our lucky tarpon spot. This time no power pole and no bait except for a few leftover crabs and pins. I threw out my one big pole with a bluecrab and my son tried to catch catfish with the gulps. No bites on the bluecrab but I finally caught a catfish on a dead pin. Cut the catfish in half and chucked it out. About 20 minutes went by and my one big pole bounced. I picked it up and a huge tarpon starting skying. Unfortunately, it spit the hook. I told my son we had to go back in because I only had one hook and thought I was broken off. No problem, the tarpon gave us the hook and catfish back. I threw it out again and about 10 minutes later, I saw a tarpon roll and then my rod doubled over. My 5 year old threwll 50 feet of anchor line overboard with buoy attached and we chased the tarpon for about 10 minutes until she wore through the 60 lb leader. Back at the dock at 8:15 AM. A great weekend on the boat with family.
