ARS SEASON, gag grouper opening in june

With May coming to an end, and June just a few days away, I am very much looking forward to getting out and fishing for Gags and American Reds. Anyone else psyched up for it? Im headed out tomorrow night in hopes of picking off some big girls out deep in the early hours of june 1st.
below are the regs in case anyone missed them:

The recreational red snapper season for both Gulf state and federal waters will open June 11-July 20, closing July 21.

This recreational season includes those fishing for red snapper from private recreational vessels. Recreational participants must have Gulf Reef Fish Angler on their license before fishing for snapper from Gulf waters.

For-hire operations that do not have a federal reef fish permit are also included but are limited to targeting reef fish in Gulf state waters only and must have State Gulf Reef Fish Charter on their license (this can be done no cost at your local tax collectors office).

The federal season for for-hire operations with a valid federal reef fish permit will be June 1-July 21. External Website

Florida set the season in 2018 and 2019 in both state and federal waters through a fishery-management pilot program (also referred to as an Exempted Fishing Permit).

State Gulf Reef Fish Charters: Any charter, headboat and saltwater fishing guide operation that targets or harvests red snapper, vermilion snapper, gag grouper, red grouper, black grouper, gray triggerfish, greater amberjack, lesser amberjack, banded rudderfish, or almaco jack in Gulf of Mexico state waters (excluding Monroe County) must have Gulf Reef Fish State For-Hire on their license. You cannot harvest red snapper or the reef fish listed above without the “State Gulf Reef Fish Charter” designation.

Absolutely - will be in town and plan to head out on the 11th and 12th.  Know a guy that helps out on a commercial snapper fishing boat and he is willing to share what depths they are hanging around off Sanibel.  Happy to post when I get some info (and verify it is good first!)

winterbeater: We found American reds from as shallow as 110 on out to the 170 ft range... the ones we caught in shallow were not legal... the legal ones made a showing in 140 and deeper...

Serotonin: Im looking forward to it as well!
