Gogs were on holiday again so we trolled thru green water to 350' and found scattered salad where my new buddy caught his first mahi....then another..baptizing his boat with blood! :o

PS. My sincere apologies for the poor gaff shot...

Way to find the fish with the full moon soon gogs should be showing up on the reef. Just a note when the mahi are that small i  just flip them right into the box from the leader.

We picked at them in that same scattered weed and found a few keepers. Good thing as the bottom bite was dead. When Dolphin are thick we sling the small ones in the boat but when they are thin we use a landing net for the little ones. Works great without puncturing them.

Thanks for the tips but because it was his first mahi, we didn't want to take the chance of pulling the hook!

"Most avid gog fishermen know all too well that a full moon offers less than ideal conditions. Some won’t even waste their time during a full moon, but sometimes you have to go when you can go. When this is the case try hitting the water just after sunset and fish hard until about 11 o’clock p.m., as the bite is often better before moonrise. During ideal moon phases with darker evenings, gogs can be found later in the evening as well as during the pre-dawn hours."

"Ideal conditions occur when the moon is darkest and in general, the further south you travel the better."

Coastal catch i agree with darkness but anytime the moon is close to full i do best at its peak. Sold bait and caught bait for years had plenty of nights with over 300 on a full moon. Triumph reef and ocean reef best results. You can troll them in port everglades right before sunrise but wont catch as much

Thanks Parker, but it really doesn't matter to me as I live in hope of at least a few blue runners if gogs fail to show...besides 'catching' the rising sun is a great way to start a new day that's full of anticipation and promise!   :)

We went out Wednesday and caught 14 gogs (mostly in 200 ft) between 4am and 6am..... we were able to turn 2 of them into 25-30 lb blackfin tunas!... :D
