Basic radar for 20' boat

After getting beat up yesterday and dodging several storms I decided to want to get a sonar for my boat. Cell phone just isn't cutting it especially when out of range.

What is the simplest most basic radar setup for a 20' center console?

    Get XM weather instead.

Any recommendations on basic but reliable XM marine receivers?  Can the receiver be used as a gps also ?

I agree with the above... XM marine service is the way to go, Of course that depends on your budget... most new MFDs will network in a sonar and XM/GPS antenna, and a radar if you want to add it.

By the way, older used electronics systems with radar that are perfectly serviceable for most common needs are frequently offered for sale as guys upgrade to the latest and greatest.

I know about guys that are dumping their Garmin stuff in favor of Simrad just to get the better mapping and CMOR capability. Also, there are leftover or end of cycle stuff that goes on sale sometimes. I scored a pair of brand new Garmin 8212s for 1200 each that way. The Hull Truth is a great place to look.
