Correct, it was severely damaged by FDR and the cascading effects of the entitlement society he crafted.
A closer look at those countries ranked higher on the lists I posted would suggest your assessment is incorrect. In fact all of them have more, not less, entitlements that you seem to think are the downfall of our society.
Funny how, for instance, not having to worry about being bitten by a snake, having a heart attack, or contracting caner and going bankrupt as a result makes people happy and productive and their countries exceptional.
I try to keep my pets safe and healthy also.

1. Finland 2. Norway 3. Denmark 4. Iceland 5. Switzerland 6. Netherlands 7. Canada 8. New Zealand 9. Sweeden 10. Australia ... 18. United States
Does that help answer your question?
Tarponator, do you notice anything peculiar about those lists of countries you posted???? Look at them and think really hard and you might get it. Good luck.

Political correctness would short circuit his little neurons before it allowed him to see or admit it.

Sure. They have more social programs and less guns.
Somehow, I don't think that was what you were after, so what was it you were hoping I would notice?

That was a fine jump! Still have that fly hooked in the corner of your mouth! Now this time jump stronger and give it the old head shake! Try again.

Thanks for response, and that link. I'm sorry to say, however, it appears as if you've read the data entirely wrong.
From the OECD link you were kind enough to share (showing % of GDP of social spending), here is the US News and World Report list:
1. Switzerland (19.73%) 2. Canada (17.21%) 3. Germany (25.29%) 4. UK (21.49%) 5. Japan (23.06%) 6. Sweden (27.06%) 7. Australia (19.15%) 8. USA (19.32%)
And here is the Happiness list:
1. Finland (30.78%) 2. Norway (25.07%) 3. Denmark (28.68%) 4. Iceland (not in the OECD, but it's 15%) 5. Switzerland (19.73%) 6. Netherlands (22.01%) 7. Canada (17.21%) 8. New Zealand (19.67%) 9. Sweden (27.06%) 10. Australia (19.15%) ... 18. United States
So, in fact, only Canada and Australia and Iceland spend less and every single other country spends more. It's worth noting that all three somehow spend less and still have universal socialized healthcare.
You will also note that I said "programs" not "spending", but that's neither here nor there, so thank you for helping to prove the point...Mike

p.s. You watching the Masters?
Of course you did 🙂. The fact is that redistribution spending in the US is higher than all other countries except France. If you want to go exclusively by what the usnw says then that would be up to you. Have a wonderful eve.

Hi Jeff, I don't want to "go exclusively" by anything, but thanks for allowing me the opportunity. I was simply following the link you provided, and I'm sorry if it didn't quite say what you seemed to think it was saying. And since we're being cordial, I'm certainly open to the idea that "redistribution spending in the US is higher than all other countries except France" however I'm not aware of such facts. If you would kindly link to a source that shows them, then I would be more than happy to comment on them. Thanks in advance...Mike
His political correctness will never let him post the real answer!
I got it! They almost all have a higher percentage of Muslims in their population than the U.S, by at least a factor of 2 (except Iceland and New Zealand). What do I win?

It's too bad Honduras didn't make the list, I guess, as their lack of social programs and lax gun laws seems to be much more your speed.
Look at them and think really hard and you might get it.
