20 Fathom Break

PRassaPRassa Posts: 33 Greenhorn

May head out this weekend and just noticed that Red Grouper is closed "when fishing beyond the 20-fathom break." How can I tell where that is? I don't remember if it shows up on my Garmin. Google says that's 120' so do I just stay shallower than that? Thanks

A fathom is 6 feet, and 20 fathoms are 120 feet. Therefore if you stay shallower than 120 feet of water you are legal!

Not true! "The 20 fathom break" is defined point-to-point-to-point by the Gulf Council. It approximates the 120 foot depth contour, but is not the same so you could be illegal even if you're in less than 120 feet of water. Go to www.gulfcouncil.org, click on recreational regulations, then scroll down till you find the list of waypoints. A lot of guys enter a dummy route in their GPS from waypoint to waypoint using coordinates from that list in the areas where they fish so they can tell quickly if they're over the line.

AlwaysLearningMore is correct. it is a predefined set of coordinates that mark the demarcation line for where you can and cannot fish. There are areas that are deeper than 120 inside the numbers, and Im sure further south there may be an area that is shallower.
