Cold weather yak fishing

SpineymanSpineyman Posts: 8,377 Admiral
Guys and gals, let me encourage you to not let the cold hinder you from going fishing. I went out yesterday with a buddy, and that after a full week of freezing temperatures in the mornings. The reds are still super thick on the flats. We hit this one shoreline that was loaded up with redfish. We had hit after hit in 6" to 2' of water. It was a blast, so get out and give it a whirl.

Fishing beautiful Destin / Ft Walton Beach area!

May be that way for you yankee's, but not for us sunny south type... if its below 70 I'm not going outside.

But I hear ya I saw a post from J. McBride holding up a bruiser Red saying all he wanted was a Trout for dinner.. he's up in that PanHandle somewhere I think Panama area.

Yankee! Don't be cussing me like that. I was born in Orlando Fl, and never lived anywhere but Fl. As a matter of fact, up until recently, you could count on one hand the number of times I have even been out of Fl. Now!!! The Redfish I am seeing is absolutely incredible for sure. They were coming by us in wads of 2, 5 and 10's. This one little pocket we found was loaded up with mullet and there were 10 times as many Redfish under them. It was crazy, and the pocket was just a little dip in the shore line, only about 70 yards long, and 15 yards deep. Just a little dip, but loaded up. But I won't tell you about the stupid mistake I did make!

I agree with the going out part but strongly suggest taking a few extra precautions. This video is from a very highly seasoned and competent kayak angler just this past week.

One thing is for sure, I kept my derrière firmly planted in my seat. I am still a rookie and don’t need to go into the drink in 45 degree water and 38 degree weather. We had a guy with us a few weeks ago before the week freeze fall out of his yak. Water temp was 52 at the time, and we weren't that far from the trucks. He thankfully had a complete change of clothes, jacket and all.

No offense... just my slang, but Orlando is pretty far North.... I get a nose bleed if I go to Boca Raton.

Hey I'll let you slide this time because my wife is from your neck of the woods. I was just messing with you also!

Just do like us real Yankees and wear a wet suit. Our great lakes seldom get over 55 even in the summer so it's a wetsuit and pfd to be safe.
