I'm interested in learning from this. Specifically, what did he do wrong?
Should he have sped up trying to ride in the trough or the trailing edge of the wave in front?
Or was this simply an overloaded and/or leaking boat?
Just curious if there's a message here for the rest of us.....Mike
Wait for the tide to change/turn? If I ever have to calculate or gauge riding waves in...I'm not going in.
That being said he did look very heavy coming in with how he was spreading water. Maybe that was a result of riding a trough, but it looked like it was heavy to me.
The boat was bow heavy from fish/ice
I do not think it was taking on water as the bottom paint does not show it riding low until the wave lifts the stern causing it too dig in,
He should of just took his time and rode the back side of the wave
It's a game of inches. No matter how many times he may have run the inlet under similar conditions there are always slight variables that must be compensated for. In this case mother nature won. Thankfully the operator wasn't physically injured Like we always say when hurricanes approach, you can always replace material things.

TThe treacherous currents off the Jupiter Inlet struck again, this time overturning a boat and forcing the man on board to start swimming for his life.
That’s when a 13-year-old surfer headed toward him to make a daring rescue.
The teen, Sam Ruskin, on Monday recalled seeing the man struggling in the water and thinking he was dangerously close to the jetty’s rocks. Sam paddled to the man and pushed his surfboard at him.
“Come on, get on!” Sam recalled telling the man. “We have to paddle out of the current.”
Together they made their way about 150 feet to the beach, “paddling as hard as I could not to get in the jetty,” Sam said.
I should start a GoFundMe campaign. What kind of boat should I shoot for? Should I start a second GoFundMe for the truck to haul it or use the same one?

LMAO!! Good one....
Not only the water, it does look like he has no choice but to get off the throttle and the second wave catches you... Screwed...
Reading through this thread I see lots of questions.
Was that boat too heavy for some reason already?..........Was it supposed to sink like a rock or was something else causing it to not bob a couple times or swamp but stay afloat?................Did you see the go fund me page for helping David Sanderson who had his boat taken by the sea?
Been out the inlet many times and always very cautious. I always try and stay within sight . Once I see waves hinting at stand ing * I’m back and through.

But no gaff.
Priorities!
And agreed, the bow looks real heavy there, gotta be taking on water.
Seems he likes kingfish, and a lot of them. $51k in fines in 2011.

Or was this simply an overloaded and/or leaking boat and choosing to run that pass on an outgoing tide?

He looked in trouble before he rode the wave. Loaded up with something. And the boat SANK. What, no flotation?
I'm pretty sure only boats smaller than 21' are required by the USCG to have flotation inside
Yep. You are correct. Still, would that boat have sunk that fast without being overloaded?
That's bad...men in power suck...
yes, there was nothing to keep it up once it filled with water.
The engine room was not water tight and right under the console
You didn't get my addition to the joke?
It was subtle, but pretty good.

AH HA ...Good fun here... How much does that boat cost ? Anyone... For some reason I think he was uninsured.... you know, the "fine" type of guy...
WOW... Amazing...
Not a big fan of the moderators here?

I don't know the answer to your questions but would like to add one of my own. Is this the same David Sanderson whom NOAA & FWC has previously recognized for his compartment modifying abilities? :wink http://archive.tcpalm.com/news/palm-beach-co-commercial-fisherman-in-brevard-co-fined-50000-ep-383553388-343810082.html/
