County leaders cite 'confusion and concern' about Puerto Rico evacuee plans

As tens of thousands of people from Puerto Rico arrive in Central Florida after Hurricane Maria, the leaders of three counties said both the state and federal government have given them little information on plans for housing them.

“Confusion and concern are mounting,” wrote Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and county commission chairs Brandon Arrington of Osceola and John Horan of Seminole in a letter Wednesday to Wesley Maul, interim director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

“In the absence of a plan, there is the strong potential for chaos, and United States citizens from Puerto Rico deserve better,” the leaders wrote.

In the letter, they ask to meet with the state agency and FEMA about the short- and long-term plans for the influx of Puerto Ricans leaving the island, where much of the electric grid is still down.

They wrote how state legislators, the news media, their own county agencies and “several of us personally” have reached out to DEM and FEMA and not received responses.

Despite their best efforts, the leaders wrote, “we do not have a sufficient supply of housing to accommodate the anticipated influx of U.S. citizens.”

Between Oct. 2 and Oct. 24 alone, they said, nearly 40,000 passengers from Puerto Rico arrived at Orlando International Airport and 4,500 at the Orlando Sanford International Airport, numbers they expect to grow significantly in the next few months.

The Puerto Rico Power Scandal Expands

A second federal contract with a company hired to rebuild Puerto Rico’s all but collapsed power grid is coming under scrutiny, drawing the attention of federal investigators and even members of Congress even as most of the hurricane-ravaged island remains without power. The news of a second faulty contract is also raising questions about the contracting process for the island’s government-owned power company, the Puerto Rican Electric Power Authority (PREPA).

PREPA has been corrupt for decades. They've been ripping off their own citizens which is a shame. Just going to take longer for power to be restored.

Home Depot Truck through Manhattan? Seems that statement like that could send you to camp for a spell, stand-by.

When I lived up there I used to drive in the city quite a bit. Navigating is easy given the blocks and numbering, so long as you knew the one-way system. The only way to handle the cabbies is to not hesitate. Once you make your decision you have to go, as that is how they expect you to drive and will manage around you. If you hesitate at all then the horns start a hootin'. :)

Power is being restored Friday in Puerto Rico, a day after a line that was repaired by Whitefish Energy failed Thursday morning, resulting in a major outage throughout the U.S. territory, including San Juan.

Pretty Messed up when every time you see video from there people are sitting around, over weight and not doing anything... Doesn't speak for all people, but sure looks bad and leaves a bad taste in American's mouth.
Strange thing is, we, congress, nobody will do anything about it and things will continue on as normal. Good to see Trump bring light of it. Then I thought, so what, it means absolutely nothing when someone brings it up, complains, wants money back, etc... This shows how worthless of a country we have become and why we are DOOMED...
Mustang is right, great buying opportunity for the right person, Someone that has made a fortune here off the backs of the American dollar, worked an American job and can now go home and buy a house close to the ocean, put all his family members in a nice home for the cost of 500K.
I doubt they speak much english there... Even if they do it wont be to an american... No comprende...

I don't see the people FROM there doing it, I see them sitting on lawn chairs. Maybe the NEWS agencies here are showing too much of it. Here, we can only go on what we see on TV...
We do know that for 40 years, they borrowed over and over again, people staying in the poor house and are basically ok with it. If you wanted to do something with your life, you packed up and moved here over the past 50 years.
From what I read, 90% of everything they have, eat, use, etc. comes from somewhere else. They are basically Haiti, DR, Cuba, Jamaica, only they have and receive 100% support from the USA, thus, take advantage of it. When they defaulted on their loan a year ago, it was written off SOMEWHAT by Obama, because, he could, it comes out of our tax dollars. Just like the Over expenditure on Military... No different...
Should we go ahead and offer the same thing to Haiti, DR, and any other island that NEEDS it, and we know that they do ? Or do we now, just have a soft spot in our heart because NOW, so many PR's are here and part of US ?

Just saying, we cant run around the world giving away everything that workers here deserve... CHina doesn't, Russia sure as hel don't, Canada, Australia, all of them, leave it up to US and our tax dollars. No **** wonder we are still making the same money as we did 25 years ago, yet, many billionaires have 10 times the money they had then... Down here at the working class level we have a scale of people from the ultra libs, to ultra conservs and everyone wants it there way... Never in the middle and about what is best for Americans.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said he thinks the state will need "far in excess" of $125 billion in federal relief dollars. Houston Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee called for a record-breaking $150 billion aid package
