Going to try for grouper in the morning and scallop in the evening hoping the water isn't dirty from all the rain. At what depth should I start targeting keeper grouper this time of year?
I don't grouper fish much. But word on the street is that the bite has been tough. As in I havent seen many guys even targeting them over the past month. Shouldn't be long before the water cools and they move onto the shallow wrecks, rocks and live bottom though.
Ran out of Hernando Beach last weekend about 40 miles caught a few shorties (Gags).. one undersized Cobia.. Can home with a few nice Mangy's and and a mess of SM... trolled and bottom fished... Not what I expected, better than sittin on the couch though!
You waited too long. Should have been here before August 2014. The red tide outbreak that year wiped out the best grouper fishery in the GOM. We lost several year classes of red and black grouper. The fishery is going to take a long time to recover. Red snapper in >50 ft if you are going to be here over Labor Day are your best bet. Otherwise, fish inshore.
