Chubb Cay Info

Has anyone stayed at the newly rennovated Chub Cay. Can we get your thoughts regarding the accommodations and possible the costs for non-members? BTW...how was the fishing. Thanks.

the pricing is outrageous. the crews' quarters, to my knowledge, either no longer exist or are not being rented out.

you are looking at 400-500 a night per person or something similar. call or email them.

august is hot everywhere, so fishing may be slow

Thanks...just went on line and agree with your pricing characterization....pricing is for owners of 70 ft sport fish and above...doesn't seem center console fisherman friendly...okay...so we'll make out 20th consecutive trip to Bimini Sands!

Does anyone know if The Berry Island Club is still open? Used to be a decent cheap alternative to Chub.

We fished chub 10 days ago and went 2-3 on blues the first afternoon and 0-1 the next day. first day we were the only boat trolling and the next day there were a few of us and several blues were caught

I went to Chub in late June. It was a great experience. It was very expensive so if you are on a price sensitive trip, travel elsewhere. I will say that the new club is first class all the way. We went 3 for 7 on one full day of fishing and you don't burn too much fuel doing it. We could have done even better had we had a crew that had at least seen a blue before... Diesel price at the time was $4.63. The pool and service is awesome and dinners were great, but again very expensive. I highly recommend going and I am looking forward to going back early next year.

Surges are to be feared....crewed on a 42ft Ocean sport fish in 1995 spending a few days at Walkers before she closed....a surge caused a fire on the vessel at the dock that enveloped the boat is a NY minute and she was towed out of the basin while on fire before it lit up all the other boats alongside. As she was burning dive tanks and ammunition were exploding....dockside guests ran like roaches. It occurred over a July 4th holiday. She was pulled onto a reef just outside and burned throughout the nite visible to all on Walkers. Bad memory. If a marina has a reputation for surges , I would stay on a generator...or another marina.

wow, that was very unfortunate. i meant surges as in water not electricity, sorry for the ambiguity.

I was at Grand when that happened. Quite the brave bunch that cut her loose from the dock and towed her out. It burned to the water line and sat on that rock for months. Amazing sight to see..

The owner and I were off the boat when smoke started to appear. When we returned to the boat the cabin was filled with smoke. We ran aboard and grabbed two fire extinguishers but there were no flames apparent at that time. Then in an instant fire erupted throwout the vessel in all electric lines beneath, behind, and embedded in the fiberglass. Instantaneously the flames were out of control and we knew we could not put them out. We then started to untie all the mooring lines so she could be towed out. Thankfully a small work boat with two local dock hands came to the bow and tossed us a line which we made fast and then jumped off. The next morning we were taken out to the reef by BASRA to view the remains stacked on the reef .

No apology necessary...I'll take surging water over surging electricity any day!

Chubb isn't necessarily my favorite place but I have never had any problem with surge in the harbor there. But then again, I've never really felt the need to complain about surge anywhere now that I think about it.

The docks arent the best there and it is exposed to the elements. Heavy current and wind at times make it difficult to dock but for a night or 2 fishing the pocket its prob the best option if you are trying to save a little $.

here are a few recent report from active captain website

Scenic views from the club, 2017-06-27
    Captain: Sailing Doodles, Dallas (172)

SV Ruff Seas - Sailing Doodles of YouTube

We picked up a mooring here since the current can be quite strong and will swing the boat 180 with the tide change and the moorings are new and give a better piece of mind.
Terrell is the new owner of the Berry Island Club and just a really nice guy. He has done so much work on the club to repair it since hurricane Mathew. The club is a great place to spend the evening with a really comfortable deck, hammocks, and outdoor seating. A brisk breeze kept the mostquitos sways but on a calm night I can see how they might be an issue. The mooring was $25 and we dinghied in to pay the fee and grab a drink.

    repairs underway , 2017-06-10
    Captain: Pascal, Miami, fl (3646)

Took the tender from the bird cay anchorage to check it out. New moorings but still no dock. Pilings are there but no frame or planking although there was piles of lumber on land.

    Hopefully will reopen soon

    Really quiet?, 2017-05-29
    Captain: Steve Carner, Hollywood (462)

We are a 65' Hatteras yacht drawing 6'. That said, we first tried Chub Cay. Most docks still don't have power, and the place is desolate. They still asked $4.75 a foot dockage. So we went to Berry Islands Club. The dock is only partially passable with cleats that can only hold a tender. The mooring balls are great, well secured and as the tide reverses every 6 hours avoids concern that ones anchor will upset. The channel is not marked but is easy to follow and we passed an hour off low. So if it is stargazing you want, solitude with some conveniences, this is the place. No work or material was visible while we were there.

    Good Moorings, 2017-05-16
    Captain: SV Neko, cruising (300)

Not a lot going on here, but there are 7 moorings of the best quality I have seen in the Bahamas in a while - vectran pendant with chafe protection on spliced loop and new galvanized hardware. Didn't get to see the block but the parts above the water are top notch and were secure for our 51' cat in a windy squall. There is a fair bit of current and you sit wherever the wind and the current decide you should.

    New mooring balls, 2017-05-11
    Captain: RABrown, Miami FL (30)

BIC has 7 brand new mooring balls planning on going to 10. $25 cash only for now. No services ashore but repairs are underway on facilities.
