Court: FAA must reconsider regulating airline seat size

Mister-JrMister-Jr Posts: 29,979 AG
Finally! I have no idea if this will do anything for passengers, but its a start. I'm not a frequent flyer but the five or six times a year, hate it because of the crowding of passengers.

An appeals court panel said Friday that federal officials must reconsider their decision not to regulate the size of airline seats as a safety issue.

One of the judges called it “the Case of the Incredible Shrinking Airline Seat.”

The Flyers Rights passenger group challenged the Federal Aviation Administration in court after the agency rejected its request to write rules governing seat size and the distance between rows of seats.

On Friday, a three-judge panel for the federal appeals court in Washington said the FAA had relied on outdated or irrelevant tests and studies before deciding that seat spacing was a matter of comfort, not safety.

The judges sent the issue back to the FAA. They said the agency must come up with a better-reasoned response to the group’s safety concerns.

“We applaud the court’s decision, and the path to larger seats has suddenly become a bit wider,” said Kendall Creighton, a spokeswoman for Flyers Rights.

The passenger group says small seats that are bunched too close together slow down emergency evacuations and raise the danger of travelers developing vein clots.

You don't think ticket prices will increase if seats gets bigger and less people can be packed into a plane?

He is correct, the desire of a cheap ticket made the airlines make the seats smaller and the aisles narrower. More people on the plane, the cheaper the price.

Perhaps there is a market opening up.
A new air travel niche....Obesity Air....the airline for fat people.
You could bring back meals served on the plane for flights over 30 minutes.
    Free cake!

They should have a few rows with larger seats and make them cost more. For those who want more room without the other amenities of first class.

It's the desire for more profits by the four legacy carriers at the expense of the flying public.

is airlines a monopoly? I thought we had quite a few to choose from.

Why are you avoiding a simple question.

I haven't flown in 15 years, but there was an airline back then that had a similar deal. I remember upgrading to the larger seats (it was in first class if I remember right) for $50. It made the flight a lot more enjoyable.

In the past 10 years, airline mergers mean we now have four major airlines rather than nine. Unless you have flown on a commercial airline past ten years you shouldn't be acting like you have an idea of what this about.

Seats have been shrinking since the 1970's, the shrinking seat is not new.

Oligopoly, not monopoly. In an oligopoly the market participants have some opportunity to 'vote with their dollars'. In a monopoly they can only chose to participate or not.

He seems to know the definition of "monopoly". Dont much matter how many air miles he has.

Anyone care to guess what the operating cost of a 737 per flight hour is?
    Or a 767?
Remember, you get what you pay for.

Me personally, as much as I can get. Retail gasoline/convenience is a little odd in the aspect of a lot of gallons of gas for a small percent of gross profit. One store gets 10% GP on gas sales and the other I make 2% GP off gas. The one make 10% also has a $9000 rent due every month. Beer is about 15%, Cigarettes is 10%, Tobacco 20%, Lottery is 5%, the rest is 40% to 50% Gross profit.

I am happy getting 2% net profit after expenses.

I have probably flown more in the last 18 months than you have in last 5 years. There is no monopoly in air transportation. If someone wants to offer an aircraft with wider seats and more legroom and there is a market for it, then they would. It is that no one wants to pay for the additional costs. Everyone shops for the lowest prices. Business travelers are happy to pay for business class or first class.

I'm all for it. I hate flying with poor people, so pull some seats and raise the prices. I know I can fly first class as an option, but I am a man of the people...

    ...just not those people.

If you travel for a living, bless you, you have my sympathy. Those smaller seats are going to take a toll......

The nice thing about flying on air force aircraft was we had no problems with leg room, unless there was a cargo pallet in front of you.
And you never lost your baggage, you were usually sitting on it!
Maybe the airlines could learn a thing or two??
