I was just curious if there are any places in Florida where you can camp and hunt on public land? I am planning on hitting it as hard as possible this season and would love to have some fresh meat over an open fire. Thank you fellow outdoorsmen.
Go to myfwc.com Just pull up the wma your interested in and it will tell you if camping is allowed. You can also look at a map of the area when you pull up the area in question. Each wma has its own set of rules, once you figure it out no problems.
One of my favorites for this is Apalachicola National Forest. Bow season is later in the year. Weather is cool and the rules allow back country camping. Plus, its good deer hunting by Florida standards. Most National forest allow back country camping outside of General Gun season. Then, you need to be in a "hunt camp" most of these are not much more than a mowed area, but they can get a lot of campers in general gun. Same will be pretty empty in archery season. Enjoy!
I do it all the time in small game season. I've recently moved closer to the Osceola, but I used to be 15 minutes outside of the Ocala National Forest. I'd often have my wife drop me off on a Thursday or Friday and pick me up on a Sunday. I'd take a .22 or air rifle with me and squirrel or hog hunt for days. If I kill something significant, she'll come pick up the meat on the side of the road somewhere and I'll go back into the woods and hunt some more.
As long as it isn't general gun season, most of the national forests let to do dispersal camping.
