Florida Allows Unmanned Drones on Sidewalks

TarponatorTarponator Posts: 19,939 AG

"Florida has become the fourth state to allow unmanned drones to deliver goods on public sidewalks. Governor Rick Scott on Monday signed a law that states that unmanned drones up to 80 pounds can saunter on at up to 10 miles per hour, but only if a human is able to immediately seize control of them if anything should go awry. Though the law is effective immediately, there are currently no ground delivery drones ready to buzz around Florida just yet. Starship Technologies, the robotics company that helped push for the law to pass, said that it is looking into initiating trials in Florida at some point this year. The company did not disclose the nature of the trials, or where and when they may take place."

Without involving politics, what are your thoughts on this development?

If I were a UPS or FedEX driver, I'd be a bit worried.

If a human must be available to immediately seize it what's the point?

A human can presumably watch more than one of them. The point is the delivery driver's days are numbered.

As soon as one of those things gets attacked by fido and the dog loses, there will be lawsuits. That or you'll have an army of thieves following the drones around stealing packages.

The drones would be worth stealing more!

well that was the other thing I was thinking. Someone would come up with a way to hack the drone. Then it's gone.

They are both DEEP into autonomous driving delivery trucks with short haul land based drones to carry to door step or local pick up locations.

Both will be here before we know it and there will be less red tape since the automakers and insurance companies are pushing self driving vehicles.

What I'm try to figure out is that when everything's automated who will have a job to have money/income to be able to buy anything those drones are suppose to deliver?

I'm sure the horse and buggy guys thought the same thing.

It didn't work out so well for them though, did it?

If you knew the kind of money being thrown into autonomous driving, robotics and drones, I don't think you'd be so skeptical.

    Or maybe you would....

    Cheap gasoline.

    Huh?

The price of gas in China is about 6.4 RMB per liter: http://www.globalpetrolprices.com/China/gasoline_prices/

RMB exchange rate: 0.15 or 6.67 per dollar: https://www.google.com/search?q=rmb+to+dollar&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

So, let's take a conservative estimate on price and see what we get:

    6.2 RMB per liter
    3.785412534 gallons per liter
    23.46955771 RMB per gallon
    6.666666667 RMB per USD
    3.520433657 USD per gallon

So, gas costs $3.52USD per gallon in China, and is actually much more expensive there than here.

Have I misunderstood you? Did you mean to say "labor" instead of "gasoline"?

    Curiously yours...Mike

Eventually we'll have autonomous robots loading the trucks, driving the trucks, unloading the trucks, and stocking the shelves. What all those people are going to do for work is beyond me.

Cheap gas means the Focus is not selling like it did when gasoline was 40% higher than today's prices. As a result, Ford is moving manufacturing to China where it cost considerably less to produce.

And be able to sell INTO mainland China without a large import duty...

If they are not selling here, take them to a market that wants them :shrug

If you've driven one, you understand why no one wants them here. I've driven 2 and both were absolute junk. Brand new too and transmission was all jacked up, bogging down, surging. awful.

Thanks for your response....although I think you quoted the wrong one when you did. :)

And now that you explained yourself, I agree. It does seem that gas prices has caused more people to buy far less efficient mid-sized SUVs in the USA and this has likely led to the downturn in Focus sales.

So maybe all that drilling and low oil prices aren't so good after all.

Now if we only did something about that....

    ...oh nevermind!

This is about drones on sidewalks and we must remain on topic!!! :)

How many sidewalk deliveries are there? Where I live it's to your house or to a business/building. There are sidewalks here too but never see any packages sitting on them. I'm sure one day drone or robotic delivery will happen but it won't be in my life time. Or most of yours.

So just how many of those would have to be built to replace lets say 50 UPS or FEDX trucks?

    Drivers will be fine.
