Frank, he probably knows one or more of the cops, and heard their "extremely jaded, one sided, and not accurate" side of the story.

Or, as restlessnative said, may have been on board the PBSO boat. Three sides to a story..........

I would have started to record after the first hint of an attitude, especially if no alcohol involved and not breaking any laws and had all safety equipment in order. There is NO need for that BS. I would have been pissed to say the least, as said, I bet the majority of the boaters during these weekends are intoxicated. Wish they'd have done that to me, I'll be calling my cousin Ric B on his cell phone...

Make sure it's reported, preferably by more an one person. It's the only way we can get rid of the bad apples.

May not be bad apples, may be a bad day for them. Lets hear the rest of the story. Then make a decision, where their next assignment is located.

Bad days happen but it's also one's job to be professional. We all have to play that game no matter what's going on with our jobs. Nobody should be fired from this, but it's good to have on record in case there is a pattern of this over time and not just one isolated incident

Random non-targeted to any particular individual musings from Capt. Keyboard Commando.

    1. I cringe EVERY time someone starts out their story with "we're experienced boaters because we're in _______ occupation." By that same logic I'm a firefighter because I took 2 days worth of hands-on fire training for my STCW/BST Coast Guard Certification/Rating so I (unlike some 'captains' offering bahama charters) can actually legally take charters to the Bahamas.

    2. No matter the situation/location, these days I'm skeptical of any 'bad encounter' where there isnt some video documentation. Everybody has cell phones, if even to record audio. Things feel like their going south, hit record.

    3. On the rare occasions I've been stopped by an authority in the area (PBSO, USCG, etc) its been a painless, professional encounter. I wouldnt want their job dealing with all the yahoos on the water lately.

    4. Gee, a woman in a positiin of authority on a power trip..... shocking.. never heard of that before.... :rolleyes

    5. If you've served in the military (thank you for your service!) , and retired, you're a veteran. If you have a job, and retire, you're retired. You dont hear retired airline pilots saying their "veterans from the airline", or captains saying their a 'veteran of captaining.'

    6. I'm nuking up a BIG BATCH of popcorn becuase i can't wait to see how this plays out.

Off my soapbox and to the Keys for 5 days then Abacos for a month. Buhbye!:banana

About (2) years ago I also had a very bad incident with a PBSO marine unit. My wife, my special needs son and I were out for a nice evening trip down the intercostal when we were stopped by the marine unit. We were cruising about 10 to 12 mph just north of the Southern Blvd. bridge. One of the deputies just maintained control of their boat while the second deputy started yelling and swearing at me. When I asked him why they were stopping me he became irate and started yelling that he needed to see all my paperwork and license. When I told him it was under my seat with my gun he really started yelling and asked me why I had a gun. I told him I was a police officer and still on the job. He continued to yell while the second deputy just looked at my son who was starting to cry. I showed him all my paperwork and my badge telling him that if he was finished we would be leaving. My wife had to reassure my son that everything was alright. After floating away my wife asked me what that was all about and I told her I had no idea but if I treated a citizen like that I would expect to get pulled into I.A.
My other teenage son has also had nothing but problems with PBSO even as respectful as he is. I think PBSO is out of control.

In law enforcement you have to keep your cool no matter how tired or frustrated your day is going. I dont know all the details but Ive seen female officers in the department I worked with that just wernt cut out for the job. When ever I got threatened I just smiled and talked softly.

So you only saw female officers that weren't cut out for the job? No male officers that weren't cut out for the job? That's interesting.

Reason # 1,000,001 that We don't use the boat on holiday weekends. You are just asking for trouble. Drunks and over worked officers = bad situation. We have lived and boated in PBC for 15+ years spending hundreds of hours a year on the water and have been pulled over once. The officer was nice and respectful!!

Sorry this happened. Had some run ins with Coast Guard way off shore with my family like this. I also refuse to boat, fish, dive on weekends or major holidays. I am usually on a schedule with tide, moon, something. These kind of stops just put a big slow down to the whole operation. The last time I did mini-season in Key Largo, we were stopped 4 times in one trip.

I didn't attack him, I found his opinion interesting. In my limited dealing with law enforcement I've found the women more forgiving and understanding then the men. But like I said my experience with law enforcement is limited.

How big was their boat? 11 people total you said. I have a 27ft and rarely exceed 5 people, regardless of age.
If its under 36ft, you are a bullseye to be pulled over by the law for a safety check.

11 people on a boat will get you attention.
still no excuse for the officer screaming and being rude...

So did the deputy ask what their occupations were or did they "volunteer" that they were firemen. If they "volunteered" the information, (I'm sure that's how it happened) then it was probably done in an effort to gain favor. I've seen firemen get very indignant when they did not get the "professional courtesy" that is "owed" to them. I was not there or know anyone involved but the fact that they were telling the deputies that they were firemen tells me that they were trying to get a break.

It was after getting yelled at and the condescending tone that took place. It was announced to show that they are extremely concerned with safety, not to gain favor. The firemen you know must be aholes. The firemen I know don't act like that. By the way there is an update. This is not the first time there has been a complaint against the screamer and pulled off the marine unit before. There are aholes in every profession that make that whole profession look bad. Why defend it? I don't want want people that give my profession a bad name ( and I would never defend that person just because they are in the same profession) nor should anybody else including law enforcement.

I don't recall defending anyone. If your friend was a school teacher would he have shown his school district ID badge? I agree that there are bad apples in ALL professions.
I find it bizarre behavior that not one, but two deputies go off like that on people who were out on a boat minding their own business, not doing anything wrong. Have your friend make a formal complaint. Hopefully whoever was in the wrong gets reprimanded.

I read it. Since neither of us were there I was speaking from my experience. This is clearly very personal for you so let me apologize on behalf of all law enforcement to the treatment of your Facebook friend. I hope they get the resolution that they seek if they were treated unjustly. Please post the I.A. outcome.

If there is an open I.A. investigation then no one at the department can comment without violating department policy. I'm sure that there are several of you who would be curious to hear directly from the firemen who were complaining on facebook. The firemen would not be violating any policies that I am aware of by coming on here and answering your questions. At this point its nothing more than a classic "Friend of a friend." story. I've spoke my peace and am very confident that I know how it played out. If there are not any, "New developments," in the forthcoming months then we will all know the outcome. I'm done beating this dead horse.

Didnt say that . You must be a democrat! One girl I immediately think of just couldnt control situations. She let the males resist her authority and then she would need to call for backup on a regular basis. I really liked her as a person she was great. Just not cut out for law enforcement. Maybe she was too nice? Maybe too emotional?
There is a point when you show up that you use a low level of force termed officer presence. Its an attitude that an officer needs to have. Its in your body positioning, its in your voice, its in your eyes. In the first 30 seconds you guarantee cooperation or you let things go downhill. You dont want to be to meek nor to mean.
I wasnt there and have no idea what took place in this incident.
