Long time lurker, first post. First off on this Memorial weekend, thank you to all you veterans out there for your service and to those who have been lost, we are forever grateful and in your debt.
Second, thanks TCBA for putting on a great tournament. It was a good time for all on the Reel Knotty/Apex Pavers and Pools team.
Boat in the water and in line to buy bait by 5am. Then waited around the inlet for the all clear to head out. Ran SE to 120 ft and started trolling. Scattered weed in 160. Trolled out past pushbutton looking for signs of life and hoping for blackfin and mahi. No love so worked back in. The weeds had consolidated into a ragged line around 240 by 9:30 but fizzled quickly as we trolled it north. Continued west and got several bonita between 110 and 90. Time to change gears. Headed to the loran tower to bottom fish.Made several drifts before we picked a nice patch of bottom to anchor on. Managed to pick through the grunts and put some groceries in the box. Ended up with a dozen lanes,5 nice mangroves and a red hind. Cut fresh pilchards on an 8 ft leader with 2oz lead waaaayyy back was the ticket. Had some bite offs on the bottom. Later heard some guys saying their kings all came from the bottom while mutton fishing. I'm guessing that's what was getting us. Our 30lb floro leaders didn't stand a chance. Called it a day around 3 after fighting a big shark to the boat. Squared the boat away, a quick shower, then to the awards banquet. Good luck if you are headed out this weekend!!!
