The drought

mindyabinessmindyabiness Posts: 7,992 Admiral
I see the forecast calls for a drop in the pressure and an increase in rain chance next week. I'm hoping this is an indication of the annual transition from the dry to the wet season.
Keep your fingers crossed or whatever it is you do to try to influence fate.

Rain = more mowing and vehicle washing, plus losing money at work.

We need some rain for sure.

I hope we get a couple dousings tonight and Thursday. These are front induced rain events, so I don't think we are transitioning quite yet. But I hope it is a start.

I have only mowed my lawn twice since new years :thumbsup

Of course this was the warmest winter I can remember and the gulf water temps are already higher then normal. I'm glad I cut my trees back.

I have mowed and bagged my lawn several times since New Years, but that was mostly to bag up the live oak leaves. Right now I have really long grass where there is shade. It looks funny because it is in the shape of a shadow of the tree. Outside of that I have what looks like sand boxes. I am letting the grass that is growing get as long as it can hoping that is will help fill in the rest of the yard once the rainy season comes.

The wife found out she finds hand watering the lawn in back relaxing. Wish she would have discovered that 3 months ago.

I see where the 10 day forecast has rain chances over 75% and more significant pressure fluctuations than we have been seeing.
Hopefully this is the start of the end of this drought.

Yes, daily lightning strikes that make me **** my pant! :banana

And maybe the ponds can fill up and make the bass a little more cooperative.

Garden could use the rain. Bring it on.
  • mplspugmplspug Posts: 16,014 AG
With the last rain we got, the backyard is really primed for the rainy season. Even the carpet grass is taking off. Yeah, I think I have about a dozen different types of grass in the backyard.

As for the front yard, if we get a real heavy rain it might all was away from erosion.

I noticed that years ago when I lived on a little lake east of Hawthorne. Lake drying up, fish have lockjaw.

But they are still there, as I found out after the 2004 hurricanes. With all that new fresh water, I became Roland Martin that winter and could do no wrong.

I didn't even target bass much, I was after the specks, Wouldn't keep them less than 12", caught many 14-15" and my personal best was a 17. Caught plenty of bycatch bass too, including a 6 pounder on a 4# speck rig with a little tiny wire hook. In a canoe. If I didn't have someone else in the boat to paddle to open water I was screwed lol.

Now that the lake is low, you would fish all day with maybe a couple strikes to show for it. But the fish are still there.

    WE NEED RAIN!!

The avatar is of the bass I caught last Saturday. She was a chunky 4.5# bass I caught on a 5" Savage Gear Sunfish. She did not looked stressed one bit. Usually the bass I catch tend to be on the lanky side no matter the time of year. Makes me wonder if the low water is good for them, bad for me. Usually this time of year I catch the bass schooling up bait fish at the crack of dawn and its a good 45 minutes of one after the other. I only stumbled upon that pattern once the first part of this year.

I must have missed the crappie spawn. These is one part of the retention pond with some old roots and a hard bottom. That's usually where they spawn. I hit it all through March and nothing but a few stragglers were caught. They either spawned elsewhere or not at all.

I use a 1" sinking Rapala in the pond for the specks and sunfish. This is on 4# line, so once in awhile when a bass hits it I "ask it" to spit it out of for the hook to pull! And it generally does. It was the only Rapala of that type I had, but I since went online and got some more.

According to the long-range forecast the rain chances increase significantly late this weekend and early next week.

We'll see, they've been blowing that smoke all spring.

I noticed the mugginess this morning, and it is actually raining in Gainesville.

We'll see how long it lasts.

    Right?

And how does it mean "more vehicle washing?"

Rain is the only time my vehicle gets washed...

You can definitely feel it this morning. I can almost step out into the lanai in my underwear now. Dewpoint has been above 70 all day, I sure hope this isn't a tease.

It was here......Africa hot.......heard thunder, saw the clouds, big dark clouds, felt the wind......no rain.
That's OK, it rained somewhere, not far from here.
    Maybe tomorrow.

We had a good rain in Sarasota this evening. The first one in many many months.

Well this has been a bad week for the drought, but a good week for us.

I even broke off a big bass at the pond yesterday, so I am hoping to get a break in the rain and try and get my revenge this evening.

I also found out that an FG knot is no match for a frustrated guy caught on a snag throwing a tantrum.

Yeah, it didn't stand up to me clamping the drag down when I got rocked up either. But I believe it broke where i cinched it down, not the actual knot itself. Clean break. Still like the knot and still going to use it.

Good luck if you get a chance tonight.

People have short attention spans. I remember about 25 years ago all the canals in the Winter Haven chain were bone dry. About 10-12 years ago the Peace river had a negative flow, great for fossil hunting. These little droughts are cyclical like the wildfires that come with them. It's good for the environment.

Well.... I suppose it oblivious that not everyone is as smart and as seasoned as you. Is that your point?
Cause I didn't read where anyone couldn't remember a drought...

According to SWWMD this was the worst drought in 103 years.
I'm sure I've seen the water lower, and more fires...so I was surprised to hear that. But... I came here with Cortez.

I remember the fires in 98 and 99 were all drought induced, I hadn't seen the water that low ever. Palatlakaha river dried up so did Haines Creek. But they come back. Like you said it's cyclical.

Looking at historical data for my lake, we've reached and possibly exceeded the lowest water level since 2001. (May data is not yet available.)

With the exception of this latest drought, water levels have been holding fairly steady for the last 6 or 7 years. Additionally, whenever we had a pretty rapid dip in levels, history shows that it's typically followed by a high water period soon after.

I have a feeling things will be back to normal soon.

Just because a drought isn't unusual, it's ok for us to wish it to be over and be happy when it's done.
