Several commercial fishing interests are trying to sneak in a catch shares type program in the South Atlantic. If this happens, say hello to rich commercial guys hiring lobbyists to get politicians steal recreational allotments and push smaller mom and pop commercial operators out of business like in the Gulf and everywhere else they have been tried.

In fact as I type we are now coming up with a plan for party/charter boats in the GOM. Yes, we will have catch shares in my industry. Basically if you don't have a catch history you will have get shares in order participate in a fishery. How do I know? I am on the AP.
NMFS loves catch shares. It tells them who, what and where everything is caught. Like it or not it is the future.

I have no problem with catch shares as long as the private guy is allowed to catch the same amount. Same rules for everybody!
Nothing is guaranteed in life however........................................

I spent a log time guiding in Everglades National Park out of Flamingo. They, the government will give you a horse and pony show to make you feel you voice is heard and that your thought are being considered....Like you said don't hold your breath.Tight line... Pete

South Atlantic Catch Shares
Do not throw a grenade into making another tragic management decision that supports a system of fish lords. I suggest you focus on being horrible at managing what you already "manage" instead of expanding into new areas. You are already well know for how you screwed up elsewhere. Maybe you can improve your management practices where they are already in place before you cause more harm to recreational anglers and charter operations in my area. Your system rewards the minority and takes away from the majority. Fix that because that isn't management. I suggest you provide more information to the public as to how your management policies have affected small businesses and recreational anglers so they can clearly see how lobbyist money makes their input worthless. You create and support fish lords. I believe a closed business and a closed fishery are the same. If a business or a fishery is managed properly, they stay open. Try to understand that. I closed fishery is a failure on your management. You have a solid record of failure, so stay out of my area until you can prove with current scientific data that your management is a success. That will never happen in my lifetime. Why does anybody get a paycheck for failing? I sure don't. Every time a fishery closes, fisheries management should lose 25% of a paycheck and see how well you manage that. That would be fair compared to what is lost in a recreational and charter fishing economy when a fishery closes. I think fair=fair so let's be fair about this.
