Help a brother out!

Whats up bros?? I'm completely and 100% new to fly fishing and I have been really looking into getting into it. Here is the problem..... I have not the slightest clue of what I'm doing. Therefore I figured I would start out with a decent combo, that's where yall come in. I live in cape coral so I do a lot of backwater and beach fishing for snook, red, ect. Anyone have any recommendations on fly rods/reels in the 8-9wt range?

I always recommend the redington crosswater combo to most people starting out its a relativly cheap entry level set up thatll get you fishing. I would definitly recommend taking classes on casting as thatll help you alot. Head to sanibel one day and talk to norm zielger (not sure on spelling) his fly shop is awesome and he can probobly point you in the right direction too.

Go to your local fly shop and check out the rods....NOBODY can choose a rod for you.

    Good luck

Hopefully you have found a rod by now but if not I would suggest getting something moderately priced to start off. Once you get a feel for different rods and their actions you will begin to know what it is you really want in a rod.

I see your in Cape Coral. Have you gone to the Fly Fishing Club meetings on Pine Island?

My first rod was a TFO Mangrove 8 wt with TFO large arbor reel. Airflow line made learning to cast a bit easier.

Now I have a dozen rods and reels. Beware of the fly fever sickness....

I agree with heartnshoal the TFO Mangrove is great for what you want it for. great starter rod. And it holds up good when the going gets tuff.

Not just the Mangrove but any of the TFO rod line-up. They cast well, cost 1/2 the price of most other rods and have a great warranty. I just picked up a 7 weight TFO BVK last week and it will cast all the fly line and then some.

TFO TICRX or BVK are a good choice. I have nine of them from 5 to 8 wt and theyre pretty good. Decent price great warranty. Kind of heavy tho and for me they throw better with a line size bigger line. Any number of good machined aluminum large arbor reels. I use Orvis because I can get them half price but reel not that important IMHO. My personal best snook of 40" (Sanibel beach) was on a # 6 Bass Pro Hobbs Creek 99$ package Caught bahama bonefish on it too. Only reason I upgraded to machined aluminum is because in Montana in sub freezing weather I stripped gears on a few reels trying to unfreeze them.

Hey all, sorry I haven't been on in a while. I ended up getting a Sage Approach 8wt paired with a 2200 and i love it! Been using it a lot around sanibel and pine island. Good in the wind and can cast a mile. Even handled a 60lb tarpon pretty well. I appreciate all the input and if anyone is interested in heading out sometime shoot me a PM!
