The what would you do thread - the cause

Reading that thread, it seemed to me many think that such an event could happen. How do you think such an event could happen? I can see a natural disaster causing localized issues, but those don't last more than a few weeks. First responders are on the scene quick, supplies brought in and people gotten out. Might be localized looting, but not much else, as we have seen in the past.

what do you think could happen, logically, to take out the entire national electric grid on a permanent basis and devastate us and our economy.

A few things to think of.

Most banks, large stores, and such have back up generators to run hours or days if needed.

Most modern electric controls and transformers are being manufactured to withstand an EMP pulse and the size of the nuke needed to take out the entire system would be difficult to launch against the U.S.

Smaller devices might take out a region, but the outage would last weeks at the most and again supplies would be brought in and people removed.

I can't think of an event that could the scenario that many seem to fear.

Don't tell me to read some work of fiction. I have read many doomsday scenarios. None of them are possible.

The only event would be an all out nuclear attack on the U.S.by Russia and China combined, which would result in bigger issues than no electricity.

I am just here for my amusement.

Read up on stuxnet . It very well could have caused a nuclear meltdown in an Iranian reactor . All it takes is a little coding.

EMP coupled with a potential massive computer hack. I could see some kind of attack that could cripple us for weeks/months; but not long term.

Makes me wish we would remain a little more neutral on the world stage, similar to Sweden...

Bird Flu kinda outbreat. Happened not long ago. Guy flew in from another Country and went home, couple days later an ER Nurse is sick after he went to the hospital. She went home as a Carrier.

Had enough of what? One of the highest standards of living in the world? Having a job? Getting excellent healthcare?

World wide EMP war would end up with a 80 to 90% population reduction. Pandemic 10-20% best estimate.

Another eruption from Yellowstone National Park might affect crops around the world and cause global starvation and chaos.

Climate change.... if (when) the ocean temperature rises another couple of degrees, the entire aquatic ecosystem will turn over, causing global starvation and chaos.

I think the threat from an EMP or Carrington level event is not given enough attention. Either would be catastrophic. 2 or 3 missiles launched into high altitude and set off from container ships near shore would cover enough of the nation to be a death nail.

My concerns are more long term..........rising sea acidity levels and increasing dead zones..........runaway greenhouse effect.........polluted ground water and air...........unsustainable harvesting.........habitat destruction...........though fortunately we can actually do something about those issues.

And natural disasters.........meteors, volcanoes, earth quakes..........well, that is just luck of the draw. Not much sense in worrying about those.

But you can't fix stupid........one lunatic with access to nuclear weapons is all it would take. No where to hide in a nuclear winter.
